George R.R. Martin's New Series Will Make 'Game Of Thrones' Fans Excited

Winter has come, and (spinoff speculation aside) ”Game of Thrones” is almost dunzo at HBO. That means we fans are looking for a new series to be our Khaleesi. Thankfully, “A Song of Ice and Fire” series creator George R. R. Martin has the perfect solution.

Martin announced on his Not a Blog site that his “Wild Cards” franchise, which includes books and role-playing games, is officially coming to TV, and development will begin immediately.

“Universal Cable Productions (UCP) has acquired the rights to adapt our long-running ‘Wild Cards’ series of anthologies and mosaic novels for television,” wrote Martin.

The author broke down the series for those who aren’t familiar:

The shared world of the Wild Cards diverged from our own on September 15, 1946, when an alien virus was released in the skies over Manhattan, and spread across an unsuspecting Earth. Of those infected, 90% died horribly, drawing the black queen, 9% were twisted and deformed into jokers, while a lucky 1% became blessed with extraordinary and unpredictable powers and became aces. The world was never the same.

Martin teases that the “Wild Cards” universe is as large and diverse as those of Marvel or DC, but “somewhat grittier, and considerably more realistic and more consistent.”

With “Game of Thrones” heading into its final two seasons, the news of this new series should hopefully ease the worries of anxious fans. If not, maybe this dragon GIF will do the trick.
