A Gunshot Filmed At 73,000 Frames Per Second Is Mesmerizing

Mythbusters' Phantom v2010 camera, which has the power to seemingly slow down time, stretching out this video of a pistol firing from blink-and-you'll-miss-it to an incredible 10-second expanse.

"I seriously had no idea it would be that lovely," Mythbusters co-host Adam Savage says in the video, reflecting on the incredible intricacy of the explosion.

"The artifacts that you start to be able to see! Mushroom clouds, and little rivulets of gasses, and fire forming on flame fronts, and pressure waves and stuff I'm not sure many people in the world have even looked at," he adds, pausing, momentarily awestruck. "It's just really cool."

According to Savage, the gun fired by co-host Jamie Hyneman has a muzzle velocity of 1,200 feet per second, while the camera captured it at a rate of 73,000 frames per second.

Mythbusters' ultra high-speed camera maxes out at 1 million frames per second, notes Nerdist, at which point a single second of video (1 million frames) would take 9.25 hours to watch. For perspective, an iPhone 6 in "slo-mo" mode is capable of shooting at 240 frames per second.
