House Democrats Show Solidarity With 'Day Without A Woman' Strike

Dozens of Democratic members of Congress were met by a sea of red Wednesday as they marched off the House floor in support of the “Day Without A Woman” strike.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and several of her female colleagues lined the steps of the U.S. Capitol to address the hundreds of women’s rights activists that had gathered in the courtyard below.

“A day without a woman ― just imagine what that would be if we could take it to its fullest extent,” Pelosi told the crowd. “We never want to find that out because women’s contribution is so valuable.”

The “Day Without A Woman” strike was created by organizers of the historic Women’s March, the worldwide day of action that inspired millions of women to flood their cities’ streets to stand up for human rights and protest President Donald Trump’s policies. Women across the country are expected to participate in Wednesday’s strike by taking off work or skipping school. Participants were also encouraged to avoid spending money in an effort to show women’s impact on the economy.

“If I ruled the world, the one thing we would do to make the future better would be education of girls ― not just here in America, but across the world,” Pelosi said. “Because when women succeed, the world succeeds.”
