It's -NEY. "Ohh, I thought you spelled it B-r-i-t-t-a-n-y." It's a common mistake. I've had this error happen to me ever since elementary school, when our names would be taped to our desks, and written in brightly colored markers. I've always thought it was strange for people who spelled their name the more common way of Brittany. We never say Britt-ah-nee. The -ney always made sense to me. Then, there was the confusion of whether there was one 't' or two 't's. Lots of people always commented that my name is spelled Brittney, like Britney Spears. Nope, still wrong, because her name happens to have the one t.

There are so many ways to spell the name Brittney, that when it is accidentally spelled wrong at work or other places, people look at me funny when I mention the correct way to spell my name. Brittney is one of those names that is common and easy to say, but when spelled differently, there becomes a confusion. I've even seen it spelled Brittnee or Brittaney. There are many different ways to spell it, but a lot of 80s and 90s babies spell it my way, Brittney. When I sometime mention that it's "-ney, not -any", some people spell it and write it down as the aforementioned Brittaney, thinking they just left out a letter, instead of forgetting to remove one. It sometimes makes me laugh when I see how badly my name can be messed up when written on a piece of paper.

Many people think that the name Brittany originates from Britain, but there is also a place in France called Brittany. People seem to agree to disagree on the origin of the name.

Usually, a unique name is hard to pronounce or spell, but a name like Brittney seems easy enough. That is, until you spell it in one of the less common ways. Brittany is the way most people are used to seeing it. Years later, people are still confused at the spelling of my name. Do you have a name that people find difficult to pronounce or spell? In the meantime, I think I will just ask for people to spell out my name as "Britt".
