'How I Met Your Mother' Alternate Ending To Be Included In DVD Collection

Great News For 'HIMYM' Finale Haters

The "How I Met Your Mother" DVD set will include an alternate ending to that controversial series finale. Co-creator Carter Bays announced the news in a series of tweets on Friday, April 4, and thanked viewers for watching the finale, even if they didn't like it.

He wrote, "16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings. We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too. We're going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother."

The hour-long "How I Met Your Mother" series finale aired Monday, March 31 and ignited Twitter after the ending revealed (spoilers ahead! But come on, you know that already!) that the Mother (Cristin Milioti) had died six years before Ted (Josh Radnor) began telling their kids how he met her. His kids then convinced him he was still in love with Robin (Cobie Smulders). In the last few moments, Ted ran to Robin and stood outside her door with that damn blue French horn. Fans were not happy.

So unhappy, in fact, that some even started a petition to change the ending. But, Bays and his co-creator Craig Thomas knew the outrage was inevitable.

The alternate ending will be available on the Season 9 DVD set and the series DVD set and will come out this fall. Rumors have been floating around that the answer to that infamous pineapple incident will also be featured on the DVD collection, but Thomas and Bays have played coy about that one.
