How We Added A Lightsaber And "Star Wars" Crawl To HuffPost

This is what happens when a tech team is strong with the Force
Troy Dunham

Just for today, you may notice a few surprises on some of HuffPost’s articles (including this one).

In honor of May the 4th, we’ve transformed our progress bar into a lightsaber, added a star-field background to our navbar, and given a special date treatment to commemorate this important day for “Star Wars” fans. And if you look closely, you’ll find a surprise homage to the film’s iconic opening crawl on the page. (Hint: Check out the row of share icons.)

From initial idea to launch, we had about two and a half days to make it happen. So our team of four developers and one designer took a divide-and-conquer approach to make sure everything came in ahead of deadline.

Thanks to the team behind the project:

  • Troy Dunham on design;

  • Mike Dorfman, Aviva Kerstein, Alexander Sapountzis, Jeremy Toussaint and Miri Ullman on development and QA;

  • Bill Bradley, Marc Janks and Lauren Moraski on news.
