PHARR Amid platters of brisket, barbecue chicken and potato salad Wednesday, about 50 Rio Grande Valley voters listened to an upstate politico discuss the future of his party — and the role of Latino voters in it.

The mixed crowd of Anglo and Latino voters at Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q gave a moderately positive reception as state Rep. Jason Villalba, R-Dallas, told them the Republican Party needed to adapt or perish.

“We’re already a minority-majority state. We’re going to be a majority Hispanic state in just six years. The voting electorate will be majority Hispanic within 15 years,” he said. “So as a political party, unless we’re able to capture at least a proportion of the mind share and the votes of this rapidly growing electorate, we as a political party, the Republicans, are destined for failure.”
