Can Virginia Make Interstate 66 A Smarter Highway? (WATCH)

WASHINGTON -- The Virginia Department of Transportation is preparing to issue a request for proposals that would institute an "active traffic management" system on congested Interstate 66.

As WTOP reports, the system would run from the District of Columbia border to Haymarket in Prince William County and rely on a series of overhead signs that would close travel lanes and open shoulders, depending on traffic conditions. The estimated cost of the Virginia project is $32 million.

New York City's Department of Transportation is in the process of creating North America's largest active traffic management system, one that will include 12,400 traffic signals across the city and systems to better control congestion in midtown Manhattan.
