“Guardians of the Galaxy” was a great movie, but with stronger female-driven storylines, it could’ve been even better. Writer and director James Gunn promised more of that in the second installment of the franchise in a Tuesday Facebook post.
“I am sick of stories where there are a bunch of fully realized male characters and one female character, whose primary characteristic is simply being ‘the girl’ or the personality-less object of some man’s affections,” Gunn said, adding that he wanted all characters to be “deeply realized.”
“I’m not sick of this because I’m politically correct ― those of you who know me know I am far from that ― but because it’s boring, and it’s b.s,” the director said. “Likewise, I don’t think only making female characters ‘strong’ is a fix either ― you see her all the time these days, the perfect female warrior, who is a reaction to the stories of the past, but who is equally as boring and one-dimensional.”
The main female character in the first installment of “Guardians of the Galaxy,” played by Hollywood’s go-to female sci-fi star Zoe Saldana, was anything but boring. Thanks to her kick-ass role, the movie passed the Bechdel Test. But even so, Gunn promises “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” will go beyond passing the test ― he says it’ll “run over it and back up over it again and again in an eighteen-wheeler truck.”
