Jay Z is in Ohio today for a concert to promote Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. There are rumors Beyoncé might even perform, too! Jay Z and Beyoncé, two people who are essentially beyond critique, right? Two people who just about anyone would enjoy seeing in their hometown, right? Wrong.
Donald Trump surrogate Dr. Darrell Scott, a senior pastor at the New Spirit Revival Church in Cleveland, thought it was entirely inappropriate that Clinton was canoodling with Shawn Carter, whom he believes to be an evil gang-banger or something. Here’s his full statement, by way of Cleveland.com’s Andrew Tobias:
Hillary Clinton’s hypocrisy is on full display again as she raises up Jay Z as a role-model for youth in Cleveland. For all of her talk about fighting for kids, she has no problem sharing a stage with someone who glamorizes acts of violence and having pushed drugs in our local communities. Donald Trump has spent time meeting with our community and has a plan for urban renewal that will allow black youth to achieve their Americans dreams through hard work, while Hillary Clinton continues to resort to stereotypical election year pandering.
Instead of trying to respond to this statement line by line, let’s just note that Jay Z escaped a life of poverty and drugs to become one of the most successful people in the world. He has started a number of successful businesses, is a sports agent, and, by the way, still holds the record for most No. 1 albums by a solo artist. He is so uncontroversial nowadays that even entities as corporate as Samsung jump at the opportunity to associate with him. He also recently addressed the issue of drugs in inner-city communities head on with a nifty little video in The New York Times. And, most importantly: He’s married to Beyoncé.
So here’s a question for Dr. Scott: If that’s not a solid role model for today’s youth, then what does that make Donald Trump?
