This fall, Joe Biden will travel the nation on a 19-city American Promise Tour to connect with Americans on a variety of subjects covered in his forthcoming memoir, PROMISE ME, DAD: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose. But before the tour (Nov. 13) and the book release (Nov. 14), the world will get a preview of all of it when Biden kicks off his media appearances by sitting down with Oprah for OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday.”
Biden’s conversation with Oprah will air on Nov. 12, and “SuperSoul Sunday” has released a clip in advance of the former vice president’s interview. In it, Biden explains how revisiting some of the most painful moments in his life gave him a new appreciation for something his mother said to him after a 1972 accident injured his sons and killed his first wife and daughter.
“I thought it was so cruel at one point, especially when I lost my wife and daughter and we walked out of the hospital,” Biden says. ”[My mother] said, ‘Out of everything horrible, something good will come if you look hard enough for it.’”
This notion was prevalent throughout Biden’s life, he continues. “We were raised in a way that we were taught just to get up,” he says. “When you get knocked down, just get up. And move forward.”
Biden also credits a strong support system for helping him move forward and acknowledges that this is a privilege not afforded to everyone struggling to move through hardships.
“You know, so many people, without the kind of help that I had, do it every day,” he points out. “Right today, somebody’s gone through something that’s typically worse than me, and they have nobody behind them. And they’re getting up and they’re moving.”
Biden’s full interview with Oprah will air on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. ET on OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday.”
