Jewish And Muslim BFFs Create Halloween Costume The World Needs Right Now

These interfaith heroes are what makes America great.

When it comes to making Halloween meaningful, these teens bested us all.

Casey Pearlman and Yasmin Idris, a pair of 13-year-old BFFs from Laguna Niguel, California, decided to dress up as interfaith superheroes for Halloween. And they rocked it ― from their striped leggings to their bright, glittery capes.

In honor of their two religious identities (Pearlman is Jewish and Idris is Muslim), the friends called themselves “The Juslims.”

Pearlman’s dad posted a viral image of the two buddies on his Twitter account, saying that he’s “rarely been more proud.”

The teens told BuzzFeed that the word “Juslims” came from a conversation the two had in the car with Pearlman’s dad, while they were trying to think of similarities between their two religions.

The Juslims’ superpower is “to watch each other’s back,” Idris told BuzzFeed.

“We’re a super team, like friends forever,” she said.

In a blog, Jeff Pearlman wrote that the teens weren’t trying to make a big statement about politics or even about religious diversity. They were simply two friends who share a bond and talk about music, clothes, scary movies, boys and school.

Pearlman wrote that a similar bond had developed between the girls’ parents.

“Not only is there no mistrust or conflict over religion—there’s not even the hint of mistrust or conflict. We’re all just people, trying to work our way through this world,” Pearlman wrote.

The dad’s photo of the teens has gotten over 62,000 retweets, with many people commenting that this was exactly the kind of refreshing message that they needed to hear during such a divisive election cycle.

The teens told Buzzfeed that they were glad to have spread a positive message.

“I think a lot of people find it really interesting that kids are standing up against a lot of what’s happening in the media and the world right now,” Casey said. “People were impressed that kids realize that and want to change something.”
