Let the parodies begin!

San Francisco 49er’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick has drawn national attention by protesting the national anthem. Now Comedy Central’s “South Park” animators join in with a teaser for the new TV season.

Kaepernick has been kneeling during the anthem to protest the discrimination against people of color in America, specifically by law enforcement.

The “South Park” trailer went directly for this contentious topic with no holds barred. It depicts several characters standing in a stadium all singing to the tune of the anthem “Colin Kaepernick is great, cops are pigs.”

It continues on for 28 seconds with a shift in narrative. The song then goes on to say, “Oh no wait, someone just took my stuff. I need to call the cops. Oh no, I just said cops are pigs. Who’s gonna help me get my stuff? Why did I listen to Colin Kaepernick? He’s not even any good.”

Kaepernick’s actions have started to take hold of other NFL athletes as several have either kneeled or raised a fist. The Seattle Seahawks as a team locked arms during their first regular season game, to express the message of unity. Kaepernick has said he will continue to kneel until real social change is made.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way.”

The firestorm has engulfed everyone’s opinion, some calling it a disgrace to the military and some burning Kaepernick’s jersey. Others believe he is exercising a right the armed forces fight for: freedom of speech.

“South Park”’s satire is sure to add some fuel to the already incendiary situation.
