On Tuesday, Jan. 26, Kesha fans will reportedly protest Sony Music Entertainment's refusal to release the pop star from her recording contract with producer Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald. As of now, her contract bars her from producing music with anyone else.
The protest is being organized along with a Care2 petition, which currently has over 107,820 signatures from people demanding Sony free Kesha. The petition has gained support from fans, Kesha's mom and comedian Margaret Cho.
"We're protesting at the courthouse to drive home that Sony needs to listen to more than 107,000 petitioners who want to save Kesha's career and human rights," protest organizer Michael Eisele told Care2 in a statement obtained by The Huffington Post. "Pop music fans are sending a clear message that they won't stand for Sony's completely unethical and inhumane treatment of a woman who was brave enough to speak up about sexual abuse."
Kesha filed a lawsuit against the producer for sexual assault and battery in 2013, claiming that he sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused her for 10 years. Gottwald countersued, claiming that Kesha fabricated the allegations in order to get out of a recording contract.
In November, the singer-songwriter begged the court to let her record new music in order to save her career. Her appeals to both Sony and Gottwald were rejected and the record label has yet to release her from the contract, The Verge reports.
Kesha's mother, Pebe Sebert, has spoken out about the legal battle on Twitter and urged fans to support her daughter.
Kesha hasn't recorded a studio album since 2012. Pitbull's 2013 single "Timber" was the last to feature her voice. Recently, she appeared on an episode of "Jane the Virgin" and had a part in the "Jem and the Holograms" movie. She also returned to the stage over the holiday season to perform with a new band called Yeast Infection.
