ABC Turning 'The Little Mermaid' Into A Live Musical With 'Cutting-Edge' Technology

The production will be a part of this world in October.

Just when you thought you’d seen enough live TV musical reboots, ABC is diving head first into the sea with one of its own.

On Tuesday, the network announced it will be turning the Disney classic “The Little Mermaid” into a live TV musical, following in the footsteps of Fox and NBC who brought us productions like “Grease Live” and “Hairspray Live,” respectively.

The two-hour event, officially titled, “The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!” will merge the 1989 animated film with live musical performances, which the network claims will include “cutting-edge” technology, according to a statement obtained by TVLine. The project will be a live-action/animation hybrid that’s never been seen before, E! News reports.

As of now, no casting announcements have been made, but we do know the production will feature the Oscar-winning songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

A slew of other live musicals are also headed to TV for the 2017–2018 season, including NBC’s “Bye, Bye Birdie” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and Fox’s “A Christmas Story” and “Rent.” Disney is also working on a live-action adaptation of “Little Mermaid” with the help of Lin-Manuel Miranda, but no word on its release date.

It’s going to be a musical year, that’s for sure.

“The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!” airs on ABC on Oct. 3.
