Why Melania Trump's 'No Fur' News Should Be Taken With A Grain Of Salt

Is this fur real?

A recent statement from the first lady’s office seems to make a bold claim about Melania Trump.

“She does not wear fur,” Stephanie Grisham, Trump’s East Wing communications director said via email to CNN.

If true, this would mean Trump has officially joined the likes of former first lady Michelle Obama and former French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy in refraining from wearing fur.

Aside from Grisham’s comment, there’s another shred of evidence that Trump is wearing faux fur these days. Animal activist and minimal makeup enthusiast Pamela Anderson shared a thank-you note she received from the first lady for a faux fur coat she had sent as a gift.

It’s important to note that Melania has not actually made a statement, in her own words, pledging to give up wearing real fur.

Pledging to reject fur has become fairly par for the course for a first lady, but neither Melania nor Donald Trump have been known for doing pretty much anything par for the course thus far ― Donald Trump’s long-rooted relationship with fur included.

In 2000, there was that GQ cover, in which Melania posed nude atop what appears to be a fur blanket. In 2002, she attended a fashion show for PETA. Just a year later, she and Donald Trump attended the opening of Dennis Basso Furs flagship store in New York City wearing ― you guessed it ― a fur stole.

If she is taking a stand on something, which her camp declined to comment on for this story, fur feels like an interesting choice.

Whether she cares to call it taking a position or not, PETA senior vice president Dan Matthews credits Anderson’s gift, as well as a video she sent “showing how animals are cruelly killed in the wild and on fur farms” with contributing to the decision.

“It’s no surprise that [Melania] is now fur-free, following in the footsteps of so many fashion icons and first ladies,” he said in a statement sent to HuffPost.

That might be true, but with a long-standing history of wear and a tendency to be lukewarm on just about everything, we’re not sure this is the last we’ll see of Trump’s many fur pieces, as pictured below.
