Joseph Schooling of Singapore won gold in the 100-meter butterfly at the Rio Olympics on Friday night, followed by USA’s Michael Phelps,Chad Le Clos of South Africa and Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh in a three-way tie.

Schooling, a student at the University of Texas who idolized Phelps while growing up, won Singapore its first Olympic gold medal.

Schooling, 21, completed the 100-meter butterfly ― one of swimming’s most difficult strokes ― with an Olympic record time of 50.39 seconds.

The second-place finishers touched at 51.14 seconds.

“I’m just ecstatic. I don’t think it has set in yet. It’s just crazy,” said Schooling.

“I don’t know if I’ve (ever) been in a tie, so a three way tie is pretty wild,” said Phelps.

Phelps was hoping to collect his 23rd Olympic gold medal. On Thursday, the most decorated Olympian of all time broke a more than 2,000-year-old record set by the ancient Greek runner Leonidas of Rhodes in 152 B.C. for winning 12 individual events in the ancient Olympics.
