Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney defended GOP presidential hopeful and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and President Barack Obama from birther claims on Friday.

GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump called his primary rival's American citizenship into question, saying it could "be a big problem" that Cruz was born in Canada. Cruz has called his citizenship a "non-issue," noting his parents were U.S. citizens when he was born.

Romney cited the debate over his own father's citizenship in his defense of Cruz, and also mentioned Obama, who has gone as far as releasing his birth certificate to silence those who think he was born outside the United States:

Romney's father was born to U.S. citizens living outside the United States. Questions arose about his citizenship status as he ran for president in 1968.
