A teenage boy was killed and his mother was seriously injured Tuesday morning when masked gunmen entered their Northwest Side Chicago home and shot them both.

About 8:40 a.m. Tuesday, at least two gunmen entered the home in the 3400 block of North Lawndale Avenue in the city's Avondale neighborhood.

Andre Vasquez, 16, was pronounced dead at 12:31 p.m. Tuesday, NBC Chicago reports. Vasquez was a sophomore at Schurz High School. His 14-year-old sister, who was also at the home at the time of the invasion, escaped and was not injured, according to ABC Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune reports the victims were taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in serious-to-critical condition. Both had been shot in the head. As of Tuesday afternoon, two suspects have been taken into custody in the crime, while a third person is still being questioned by authorities.

The mother and son had moved into the first floor apartment about a year and a half ago, Fox Chicago reports. The house is located across the street from St. Wenceslaus School and a church.

A police investigation into the shooting and home invasion is ongoing.
