New Apple iPhone, OS Available; Tethering Not: MediaBytes with Shelly Palmer June 18, 2009

Apple released the new iPhone 3GS, as well as the iPhone 3.0 OS, yesterday afternoon. While the new iPhone did not receive the same of pre-sale hype the 3G iPhone garnered a year ago, the bigger deal seems to be the new operating system, which many users had problems downloading due to a server crash. The new OS includes copy-and-paste, but the Internet tethering feature, one of the greatest additions to the OS, is not available via AT&T in the US.

MLB will begin streaming live games via video to the iPhone and iPod touch. Tomorrow's Cubs-White Sox game, available via 3G or wi-fi, will be the first game streamed to iPhone users. Out of market games only can be viewed through the At Bat 2009 application, which runs for $10.

DirecTV and Invidi Technologies signed a deal that will allow DirecTV to serve specialized, local ads to customers. The targeted advertisements will be powered by Invidi's software, which detects the location of DirecTV subscribers and feeds them local advertisements. DirecTV plans to introduce the advertising technology in the first quarter of 2010.

According to a recent report done by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, Americans prefer Internet connections to both cell phones and cable television. The study concludes that 63% of adults have broadband connections at home, and that "broadband is now in the 'must keep' category for Americans, even when economic times are tough." Author of the report John Horrigan noted that many Americans believe "their home broadband connection as a conduit for connecting to community and economic opportunities."

CBS and ATAs have rescheduled the Emmy Awards. The program will now air at on the original date, Sunday September 20th at 8pm. The show, which was moved to September 13th due to an NFL double header, was moved back to the original date due to the MTV Video Music Awards airing at the same time.
