True friendship knows no species. Just ask this trio of blind cats and their new pit bull besties.
A 7-year-old cat named Helen and 10-week-old sibling kittens, Bruce and Willis, came into the Faithful Friends Society animal shelter with serious eye problems.

Helen had severe glaucoma. Her eyes were bulging, causing her pain and affecting her balance. Bruce and Willis’ eyes were ulcerated, protruding and infected.
The rescue organization in Wilmington, Delaware, decided to remove the cats' eyes to give them the best chance at living normal and pain-free lives.
After their surgeries, however, none of the cats were adjusting well to a life in the dark.
“Helen was so sweet but so distressed in her cat kennel,” Sherry Stewart, a volunteer at Faithful Friends who has fostered over 80 animals, told The Huffington Post. “I knew I could at least give her a temporary place to call home where she could recover and learn how to transition to life without sight.”
Stewart also decided to foster Bruce and Willis, who experienced complicated surgeries that left them looking “terrible compared to Helen.”

She set up a big playpen in the house she shares with two rescue pit bulls, Alfie and Frankie, and took all three kitties home.
Alfie, who is gray with pointed ears, was discovered in 2012, locked in a shed and almost starved to death. Because of his physical condition he was scheduled to be euthanized until Stewart decided to take him in.
“I picked up Alfie and I put him in the back seat of my car with my daughter. He looked up at her, gave her a kiss and we knew he was ours,” Stewart said. Since then Alfie has been paying it forward by becoming a certified pet therapy dog. Frankie, also a rescue, “is a little over the top with his affection,” said Stewart.

But the combination of both pit bulls’ nurturing personalities has helped the foster animals that come through Stewart’s house to heal -- especially in the case of Helen, Bruce and Willis.
“They kind of act like surrogate moms,” Stewart said. “They seemed to have sensed they need little extra TLC.”
Ever since the three cats have arrived in Stewarts home, the trio is really thriving, thanks to her pups’ affection.
In fact, Bruce, the smaller of the two kittens, feels so comfortable around Stewart’s two dogs that he naps on Alfie’s back.

Willis, who was a little shy and reserved in the beginning, has really come out of his shell.
“He doesn't act distressed and doesn't have any trouble finding things,” Stewart said. “He can even jump into my bed now.”
Helen has transitioned the best to being blind: She can take stairs and understands where things are. Her recovery is thanks in part to Stewart’s dogs, but she really thrived when she bonded with another foster cat named Hubbell.
“Helen was nervous with him at first, but he was persistent and finally won her over,” Stewart said. “They would eat, play and take naps together. In a short period of time, they really formed a very special relationship.”

Hubbell was adopted last Saturday, but Helen, Bruce and Willis are all still up for adoption.
If interested, please check out Faithful Friends for adoption details. Also, keep in mind that because of the traumatic experiences brothers Bruce and Willis have endured, they need to be adopted as a pair.
Faithful Friends, in addition to pet adoptions, also offers a low-cost vet care and therapy program, food bank, pet therapy program and vaccine clinics.
