More than 12,000 refugees and migrants have crossed the border into Slovenia since Wednesday.

With Hungary's border with Croatia closed, thousands of refugees and migrants are instead making their way to Slovenia.

More than 12,000 refugees and migrants have crossed into Slovenia since Wednesday, as hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and poverty make their way to northern Europe before winter. Freezing temperatures, wind and rain have made the journey increasingly difficult.

More than 600,000 individuals have crossed the Mediterranean this year, and over 3,000 have died or gone missing making the trek.
