CNN is parting ways with “Believer” host Reza Aslan after he drew criticism for insulting President Donald Trump on Twitter.

In a statement released to Variety on Friday, the network said:

“CNN has decided to not move forward with production on the acquired series ‘Believer with Reza Aslan,’ We wish Reza and his production team all the best.”

Aslan’s show, “Believer,” had been picked up for a second season, but that will no longer happen, according to AdWeek.

Aslan released this statement about the cancellation:

Aslan, a religion scholar-turned-CNN-host, sent a tweet calling the president a “piece of shit” earlier this month in response to one of Trump’s tweets promoting his travel ban.

Aslan removed the message, but a screen shot is below.

Aslan later apologized for the tweet, saying he should have “used better language to express my shock and frustration at the president’s lack of decorum and sympathy for the victims of London.”

On Sunday, CNN responded to the outcry over the tweet with its own statement:

“Reza Aslan is not a CNN employee, but does host a series on the network. We are pleased that he has apologized for his tweets. That kind of discourse is never appropriate.”

Aslan has called the president a “piece of shit” before, along with some other choice descriptors:

CNN’s split with Aslan comes a week after the network cut ties with Kathy Griffin, after she posted a photo showing her holding a prop designed to look like Trump’s bloodied, severed head.
