Robin Givhan, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Fashion Journalist, Laid Off By Newsweek

Robin Givhan Laid Off From Newsweek

A major round of layoffs have occurred at Newsweek--an unfortunate byproduct of the 80-year-old news publication's transition into an all-digital format.

Robin Givhan, special correspondent for style and culture for Newsweek and its website The Daily Beast, is one of the many who have been effected by the change.

Newsweek's editor Tina Brown and CEO Baba Shetty announced in October that there would be layoffs, but we never expected Givhan would be affected by the cuts.

"Sad to say that yes, it is true. Quite the 'Merry Christmas,'" Givhan wrote in an email to Journal-isms on Saturday. "I'm in New York as we speak doing book research and happily following up on any new career opportunities," she added.

Givhan joined the Newsweek/Daily Beast staff in 2010 after leaving a style editorship at the Washington Post, where she become the first and only fashion writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. With stories like First Lady Fashion Fatigue and Trayvon, Hoodies and America's Fears, Givhan is revered for her unique perspective on fashion that goes beyond simply reviewing what designers send down the runway.

Unfortunately, The Daily Beast will now be missing out on that perspective. In turn, arguably the best fashion journalist and one of Time magazine's "All-TIME" 100 Fashion Icons is open for hire. Let the job offer frenzy begin!
