Sam Smith is winding down 2015 and gearing up for his musical hiatus by getting some fresh ink.

On Tuesday, the 23-year-old singer-songwriter revealed four new tattoos on Instagram, People magazine reports. Each design, he explained, has its own unique, personal significance.

The first, an equal sign on his "wedding" finger, is a pointed reference to his views on same-sex marriage and "equality for all."

The double red lines on his right hand, Smith said, were a nod to "one of the oldest tattoos ever found on a mummified body that was found buried alone."

The third design, "honesty," took inspiration directly from Smith's pop career.

"This is what I promise to be in my music," he wrote. "It's what I live by."

Smith, who has vowed to "kiss more boys" during his upcoming, self-imposed break from music, seemed to be poking fun at his single status in the fourth tattoo. Irreverently calling himself a "melancholy twat," he said that being "alone" was "a small positive."

"No longer lonely," he wrote. "Just alone."

Who knows? Maybe he won't be "alone" for too much longer.
