Fat-Shaming Commercial For Sanitary Pads Is Offensive On So Many Levels

Ugh.

A commercial for a sanitary pad aims to promote a product for women on their periods. Instead, it does a pretty good job of shaming them.

A video posted by Unicharm Australasia promotes Sofy Be Fresh sanitary pads by introducing a woman and her alter ego that appears when she’s on her period. Seconds before she sees a reminder on her phone that she’s about to start her period, the woman comes face to face with another woman in the same clothes. This new woman is clearly bigger, and based on the tone of the commercial that's not a good thing.

The offensive commercial doesn't end with its fat-shaming message though. The rest of the video features the alter ego as she sits around the house in frumpy clothes because women on their period obviously stay in hiding all day. She also reminds everyone that women can’t possibly control their emotions while menstruating when she yells at someone while ordering food and throws a fit.

But wait, there's more! In between shots of the alter ego eating food she claims is "awful," she questions her silly decisions ("Why am I standing in the middle of the room?") and starts laughing only to turn that happiness into tears two seconds later. We totally forgot periods make women unstable. What a drag.

Many have shared their feelings about the commercial on Twitter, speaking out against its fat-shaming and period-shaming message.

The video closes with the words "goodbye ugh" on the screen and shows the woman from the beginning driving away from her crazed alter ego. We’d rather say goodbye to this ridiculous commercial.

H/T Bustle
