‘How Did Our Son Go From College-Bound Star Athlete To Being Homeless?’

A few years ago, Ian, now 22, was an honors student with a scholarship to play college basketball. Now he's homeless, unemployed and admits he uses drugs.

His parents, Rachael and Tino, turn to Dr. Phil for help understanding how that happened -- and what they can do to shift the course of their son's future.

In the video above, Ian recalls, "I was a good student ... I loved the game of basketball and always had dreams of being professional, but it didn't work out." After going to college, he says, "I fell in love with smoking [pot]. I was smoking every day. My third year of college, I lost motivation. I dropped out and never went back."

His parents let him move back home, but they say when Ian wouldn't get a job or go back to school -- and smoked pot under their roof -- they kicked him out. At that point, Ian began sleeping on the streets or sneaking into their tool shed at night for shelter.

"To see him throw his life away is really, really hard. It's very devastating," says his mom. "I just want to know what happened to that fun-loving kid that I sent off to college."

But Rachael and Tino are not only concerned about how Ian's life has so drastically changed. They say they question if he's delusional, has mental illness, or if there's a deeper problem at play.
