On March 23, the lush new Broadway musical Anastasia began previews. The show is from the talented Tony Award-winning creators of Ragtime (Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens) and was inspired by the beloved 1956 and 1997 films.

In between rehearsals Christy Altomare, who plays Anya, recently talked to ShowTickets.com. Anastasia, which also stars Derek Klena, John Bolton, Ramin Karimloo, Caroline O’Connor and Mary Beth Peil, opens at the Broadhurst Theatre on April 24th.

What do you love about playing Anya?

Christy Altomare: She has such a beautiful arc. I believe that in her heart, Anya has a hopeful spirit, regardless of what has happened in her life. You can picture a girl with amnesia walking through the streets of Russia. She has nothing but an inkling of a hope to get to Paris. All that gets her through is optimism. Against all odds she tries to figure out the secrets of her past. I love connecting to characters like that.

How much did you know about Anastasia before you took on the role?

Christy Altomare: I watched the animated classic as a young child. I fell in love with the story. Like many girls my age, I used to run around in my basement singing “Journey to the Past.” I had that going into the audition. Once I was cast in the role, my real research began, learning about the Romanov history, seeing the 1956 movie and so on.

Did you love performing when you were a child?
