People Are Raging Mad That Starbucks' Newest Cups Aren't Red

And the design’s meaning is making people foam at the mouth.

Starbucks’ new green cups are causing some to see red.

Each November, the company redesigns its cups for the holidays. This year, however, it seems that Starbucks may be releasing two designs this month, the first of which debuted on Nov. 1.

The cup, designed by artist Shogo Ota, features a “mosaic of more than a hundred people drawn in one continuous stroke.” It’s also green instead of the traditional red cups the coffee brand has served its customers during past holiday seasons. And the color swap is making some Twitter users steam:

Others are foaming up about the message behind the cup.

According to a press release from Starbucks, the design is meant to represent unity.

“The green cup and the design represent the connections Starbucks has as a community with its partners (employees) and customers. During a divisive time in our country, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other,” Howard Schultz, chairman and CEO said in the release.

Yet, not everyone was upset. Some loved the message — especially during today’s polarizing political climate.

Others simply sat back and waited for the inevitable controversy to begin, being that this is not the first time people have had issues with Starbucks’ holiday designs.

And one Twitter user used the controversy as a soapbox for free dessert:

Thing is, these may not be the company’s intended holiday cups. While Starbucks told The Huffington Post through an emailed statement that the rest of the company’s holiday plans “are still under wraps,” numerous employees have already shared images on social media of boxes containing the company’s actual seasonal cups that have already arrived in stores. Each box is sealed and marked “NO PEEKING until November 10.”

One employee, a Reddit user who goes by the name DasUberSquid, found the temptation as irresistible as a Peppermint Mocha and posted a picture of what he found inside:

“I peeked,” the user wrote as a caption.
