Stevie Wonder Brings Down The House During All-Star Prince Tribute

Chaka Khan brought Wonder on stage with her to perform Prince's "I Feel for You" and "1999."

President Barack Obama left a surprise video message and music royalty banded together to honor the legendary musician Prince on Thursday night.

The highly anticipated tribute concert for the artist who died in April of an accidental prescription drug overdose kicked off with an all-star line-up including Tori Kelly, Doug E. Fresh and R&B ensemble Mint Condition. Highlights included a Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan performance of “1999” that set the Minnesota crowd abuzz.

The concert took place nearby Prince’s Paisley Park home, in the Xcel Enegy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Tickets to the arena that can hold more than 20,000 people sold out in minutes when they went on sale. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman declared Thursday “Prince Day” in the city and monuments were lit up in purple at night, according to Reuters.

John Mayer dropped out citing a scheduling change and Christina Aguilera cancelled due to throat sickness. But Pioneer Press music critic Ross Raihala wrote that they weren’t missed much, as it left more artists with direct connections to Prince in the roster.

Although the concert was slated to be three hours long, no one seemed to mind the additional two hours it ran for, with the #OFFICIALPRINCETRIBUTE hashtag trending on Twitter throughout Thursday night.

Take a look at some clips from the concert in the Twitter videos below.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story stated that Anita Baker was on the line-up of performers. She canceled her appearance before the tribute concert.
