Supermarket Bans Shopping In Pajamas

A supermarket in Wales has banned customers from wearing pajamas and nightwear in the store after other shoppers felt uncomfortable.

The Cardiff store, part of the Tesco's chain, now greets customers with a sign bearing the warning:

'To avoid causing embarrassment to others we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting our store (footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted).'

Explaining the rule, a spokesperson said, "We're not a nightclub with a strict dress code, and jeans and trainers are of course more than welcome."

However, shoppers argue that the new dress code means parents in a rush would not be able to pick up their shopping after dropping their kids off at school.

The BBC spoke to one new victim of the rules Elaine Carmody, 24. Carmody had been hoping to buy some cigarettes (in British slang, 'fags') from the store when she was refused entry. The BBC reports:

She said she been "popping in for a pack of fags," but if she had been doing a full shop "then we obviously would have gone in clothed".

"But we only wanted fags and they still refused us to go in for a pack of cigarettes," she added.

Carmody, obviously an angry customer, was also interviewed by The Daily Telegraph:

"You used to always be allowed in Tesco. But not now - it is ridiculous and stupid.

"I've got lovely pairs of pyjamas, with bears and penguins on them. I've worn my best ones today, just so I look tidy."
