Mandy Patinkin Says Ted Cruz Missed The Point Of 'The Princess Bride'

"Open your arms to these people, these refugees trying to get into our country, and open your hearts."

Ted Cruz likes to reenact scenes from "The Princess Bride" while campaigning, but one of the film's stars says the GOP presidential candidate missed the most important part of the film.

Mandy Patinkin, who plays revenge-seeking Inigo Montoya, told The New York Times that Cruz "is not putting forth ideas that are at the heart of what that movie is all about," especially when it comes to the refugee crisis.

The key to the film, Patinkin said, comes at the end after Montoya defeats the man who killed his father.

"Inigo says to the Man in Black, 'I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it’s over, I don’t know what to do with the rest of my life," Patinkin told the Times.

"I would love for Senator Cruz, and everyone creating fear mongering and hatred, to consider creating hope, optimism and love," Patinkin said. "Open your arms to these people, these refugees trying to get into our country, and open your hearts."

Earlier this month, Patinkin wrote in the Washington Post about working with the International Rescue Committee to help Syrian refugees who had come ashore in Greece and were trying to reach relatives in Germany:

"Standing with them, I did not see strangers to be feared but the faces and stories of my own family. I saw Grandpa Max, who left Poland to escape the Nazis, and Grandma Masha, who was forced from Russia during the pogroms. And now I could help this family reach the safety of Germany -- a place my ancestors had fled -- in search of welcoming arms."

A spokesperson for the Cruz campaign said the candidate's love of the film isn't a political issue.

"Having some fun with a cult classic like 'The Princess Bride' should be something we can all get behind, politics aside," Catherine Frazier told the Times.
