Amazon’s newest pilot may seem retro, considering it’s set in the ‘90s and starring some of that decade’s favorites — but the show’s creation is part of one of the biggest innovations in streaming.

“The Interestings” stars Lauren Ambrose and David Krumholtz stopped by Huffpost Live to talk about their pilot and Amazon’s method of choosing which original series to produce.

“The Interestings” is based on Meg Wolitzer’s hit novel of the same name and features “Six Feet Under” actress Ambrose and Krumholtz, from “10 Things I Hate About You.” The show, which focuses on a group of friends from an artsy summer camp who vow to preserve their friendships through the decades, is part of Amazon’s Pilot Season, where viewers can choose the service’s next original series by viewing pilots and voting for their favorite.

The method offers a counter to the typical television production circus, where networks choose to pick up a pilot or not, allowing so many amazing series to die before viewers can ever get a taste.

“It’s a really interesting system because no other network does that,” said Krumholtz. “Networks typically hoard their pilots and you find out later that there was this great pilot that never got made into a series because no one ever got the chance to see it. In this case you really do have a voice. You really have a chance to put us to work.”

“It’s not a thing that goes and dies, it’s a thing that people can see. You can actually see this work that we all did for all those months,” said Ambrose.
