We think your immigrant story is important. Whether your family arrived last week or 150 years ago, we all have stories. Thank you for telling yours and contributing to, ‘The Story of US.’ Tell us about your version of the American Dream, and THREE ISSUES you’d like our new President to prioritize.

The traditional motto of the United States is “e pluribus unum,” which means, “Out of many, one.”

If you’re an American, chances are your parents or grandparents were born somewhere else. We’ve a nation of immigrants. Whether you’re a first or fifth generation American, almost no one’s been here that long. Beyond culture and common ethics, this is really what unifies us. Our families chose to leave their homes and come here. It doesn’t matter if it was last week or 150 years ago, they came for a better life. It doesn’t matter if they were rich or poor, they came so we’d have a better chance.

My name is Jessica Hoppe. I am the daughter of Carlos Hoppe, a half-German/half-Ecuadorian immigrant and Cilia Hoppe, a Honduran immigrant who came to this country in the 60s and 70s respectively.

My father instilled in me a deep love for this country, a fervent interest in politics, and a gratitude for the opportunities afforded to me as a citizen of the greatest nation in the world.

My mother challenged us, and even herself, and rose beyond what it is was to simply be an immigrant, a mother, an American. She was a strong willed and independent woman. For my two sisters and I, she is the foundation rock of what feminism means to us.

I’m proud of my heritage and I’m proud to call myself not just an American, but an American Woman.

I pledge allegiance to this country, no matter its choices, I actively serve towards the betterment of my community. I demand to be seen, heard and represented.

The President-elect will not only serve his constituents but all Americans.

Let’s raise our voices. Let’s get to know our neighbors. Let’s share these wonderful stories that make America as diverse and interesting as it is. Your story is just as important as mine. And together, we should ALL be heard.
