Todd Akin: 'Bad Ideas' Lead People To Slavery And Poverty

Former Missouri congressman Todd Akin said Friday that he is a proponent of weeding out "bad ideas" that, in his view, keep society down.

In an interview on HuffPost Live, Akin, who lost his 2012 Senate bid after controversial comments about rape, said he had no regrets about co-sponsoring a bill that would have only allowed federal funding to cover abortions in cases of rape.

"I don't have any resentment at all," Akin said. "I came into politics from an engineer's point of view. I came in with a very strong belief there's good ideas and bad ideas. I was trying to be a salesman and a spokesman for ideas that make this a more beautiful and a better country. I don't really carry personal animus toward other people. I don't really dislike people."

"There's some ideas that leave people in bondage, in slavery, in poverty, in horrible conditions, and there's other ideas that allow people to be free and prosperous. I've tried to be a defender of good ideas, but I don't care about trashing anybody, that's not my job," he added.

Akin is currently making the media rounds to promote his book, Firing Back, in which he offers a passionate defense of his "legitimate rape" comments and claims people misunderstood the meaning of the phrase.
