Hispanic women Democrats like Alejandra Campoverdi are Donald Trump’s worse nightmare.
This week the first White House deputy director for Hispanic media in American history returns to Washington, D.C. for a fundraiser to support her campaign for congress. Alejandra Campoverdi is running for Congress in the special election for Xavier Becerra’s vacant seat in California’s 34th congressional district.
Democrats should get behind Campoverdi’s election to congress. If she wins it would represent a profound shift in the seriousness with which the party backs Latina staffers and candidates. As recently as last year only a dozen-or-so paid Latina staffers could be counted amongst the hundreds of operatives in the party establishment.
With Tom Perez’s ascension to the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee, he needs to have a real conversation with Vice Chair Maria Elena Durazo and Finance Chair Henry Muñoz about creating an meaningful integration of Hispanic perspectives at the top of the party establishment. Muñoz and Durazo are long-time establishment veterans who know the issues facing Hispanics up and down the ticket for Democrats, and in the halls of our national establishment.
Backing outstanding Latina candidates like Campoverdi to shatter glass ceilings for our community is a necessary first step. In Campoverdi’s case, like Becerra before her, she’s a dedicated democrat, a skilled media operator and razor sharp negociator of policy that favor our community. She is also a die-hard Californian who understands our community ... where we’ve come from, the challenges we face, and how we need to get to where we need to be.
Come support her tomorrow from 6 to 8 PM EST at The Gibson at 2009 14th Street in northwest Washington, D.C. The event is co-sponsored by Pete Rouse, Ruchi Bhowmik, Ben Chang, Brian Forde, Tom Gavin, Brad Jenkins, Tamara Klein, JP Schnapper-Casteras, Lesley Lopez, Reggie Love, Chris Lu, and Jimmy Lynn.
