You Probably Missed This Tiny Detail In 'Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone'

Harry's first look into the Mirror of Erised is even sadder than you thought.

Potterheads, get ready to feel all the feels with this new fan theory.

Remember that scene in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone where Harry first discovers the Mirror of Erised? Well, you should. And if you're a little rusty on the details, let us get you back up to speed.

Harry first stumbles upon the Mirror of Erised on the first night he uses his invisibility cloak to enter the restricted section of the library, hoping to research Nicolas Flamel.

In an attempt to hide from Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch after opening a screaming book, Harry escapes to a classroom (later revealed to be the Room of Requirement), finding the mirror. The Mirror of Erised shows whomever looks into it their deepest desire (in fact, "Erised" is "desire" spelled backward). When Harry gazes into the mirror, he sees his parents surrounding him.

The scene is already touching enough, considering Harry gets to look at his deceased mother and father as if they were standing face-to-face, but one Tumblr user keenly points out an additional reason this scene is so moving.

The theory: Harry probably didn't even know what his parents looked like before he looked in the Mirror of Erised.

Think about it.

Harry was placed on the doorstep of the Dursley house as an infant, with zero personal possessions or family photos. It's very unlikely that Uncle Vernon or Aunt Petunia had any photos of the Potter family, considering their passionate disdain for the wizard world.

In other words, as the Tumblr user explained:

Harry Potter spent eleven years of his life without knowing what his parents even LOOKED like.

How sad is that?! Right when you didn't think that scene could break your heart any more than it already did ...

And if you have any doubts about this theory, watch the scene from the book's film adaptation again. It totally makes sense. DO IT.
