Stenography 101: How the Press Let Palin and Cheney Rig the System

What's Your Reaction:

Not content with its lapdog coverage of President Bush over the past decade, the Beltway press has adopted a new, super-soft way to deal with Bush's former vice president, Dick Cheney, as well as GOP media star Sarah Palin. Journalists have set aside what had been decades' worth of guidelines and embraced special new rules for how Cheney and Palin get treated.

In a word, it's stenography.

That's how too many scribes have covered Cheney and Palin in recent months, allowing them to dispense tightly controlled pieces of information, which journalists then trumpet as breaking news. And yes, the trend is unprecedented in modern day American politics.

It's actually a two-fer. First, it's unprecedented because the Beltway press has never showered attention on political losers, such as Cheney and Palin. Meaning, the press has never cared what a former VP had to say about current events right after leaving the White House (think: Dan Quayle), or what a failed VP candidate had to say just months after losing in a landslide (think: Geraldine Ferraro). Traditionally, pundits and reporters disdain political losers (think: Mike Dukakis). But for Cheney and Palin, the rules have been generously reworked.

The second oddity is that journalists now allow Cheney and Palin to completely dictate the media ground rules and afford them the chance to have one-way relationships with the press. Palin, for instance, perhaps still bruising from her woeful 2008 media performances, still hasn't allowed herself to be interviewed by a single independent political journalist since she launched her book in November. Instead, she mostly communicates with the mainstream media via Facebook. And now that she's signed on to join the Fox News staff, the chances of Palin ever speaking with the serious press seem to be less than zero. That lack of openness stacks the deck and leads to dreadful bouts of stenography; of literally recording what controversial Republicans say, and nothing more.

Excellent article - speak truth to power. Dad and dangerous daughter Liz get a standing platform by the media (MSM) to say anything they want without question or concern. Dad Cheney has put the fear of the devil in America and nobody challenges him bcuz of fear of retribution. What does that tell you? Palin is a disaster to America. The media ever challenged her during the campaign to do a press conference because of that she was allowed to stay in the presidential race as a vp candidate without having any knowledge of the world - none. I hold the MSM responsible for promoting Palin as they thought she was a new shiny political object and they praised her and let her treat the media like dog poop. MSM should be disgusted by allowing Cheney and Palin to undermine the values of America

Fabulous post!
90% of the problems in America are because of the MSM.
Dan Rather was right when he said it is not "Newscast" anymore, it is "Viewscast"
I am more troubled by the media now, and how they lie and behave, than by any other thing going on.

In the last thirty years the news media as a whole (national down to local) has moved ahead of traditional untrustworthy segments of our society (politicians, lawyers, used car salesmen, bankers) to easily become the biggest blight on our civilization. For every truth they tell there are a thousand lies to go with it. Their actual function in our society no longer matches their stated function.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for writing this, and let's hope this is a problem soon to be corrected. Even allowing Liz Cheney to speak on anything other than Fox is a disgrace. Rachel Maddow last night brilliantly dissected how Cheney's daughter diverts answering a question, and I know that Palin is a master at changing the subject as well. This Facebook propaganda "she" writes is a juvenile way to get her message out, but it appears to be working at stirring up the pot. The hardest part of hearing so many lies publicly propagated is not having a voice (except for here) to challenge them. We need more tenacious journalists.

Everything that is wrong with today's media can be summarized by the fact that it's the broadcasters who are now in charge rather than the print journalists. Back when I was in J-school 30 years ago, the broadcast majors were known derisively as "The Talent." In other words, if you didn't have the brains to be a writer, you at least had to have good hair so you could stand in front of the camera and read the words the writers had written for you. The profs never thought the broadcasters would have to actually *think* about, you know, stuff, and so they passed them through the classes just as quickly as possible with no real intellectual challenges. Broadcast journalism became such a joke that even football players majored in it because they didn't have to do any work to pass the classes. Those are the people who are in charge of our media now.

You nailed it.

But what's eating me is that since they have been called on for being the boot-licking lapdogs of the last president, the media NOW want to be seen as savage watchdogs on alert for any miss-steps they perceive by Obama. They gave Bush a smile and a wave at every stupid move he made, and now try to fry Obama on even the things he gets RIGHT.

And the ignorant among us are still trumpeting on about the "liberal bias" in the Media!!!!

What a hoot !!!!!!!!!!!

Perfect description of the "education" of the erstwhile Sarah Palin.

And it took her SIX years and several schools to even finish that excuse for a college degree.

Definitely NOT a hoot, when one considers her popularity among the other under-educated who have just enough knowledge to think they know something.

I wonder if it is true she had zero knowledge of the backgrounds of the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. And a quarter of this country believes her qualified to be the leader of the world and in charge of the nuclear bomb switch.

Despair.
