Someone, please tell me: What am I missing?

I think I am just one of those people who does not get the Potter mania. I heard kids stayed up ALL night reading that book. You know what I did last night? SLEPT!

I read the first three books and by the time the fourth one came out, there was no way in hell I was going to read it. First of all - too many pages. Second of all - been there done that (the basic idea grew old quickly - it is like Curious George who gets in trouble and then saves the day book after book). Third of all - there are other things to read (still have not finished New York Magazine's profile on Eliot Spitzer). And finally - the movies (my Sparknotes, so I could at least keep up with the conversation).

Today, while vacationing in Vermont, I stopped into the local bookstore and found out that last night there were 800 - 1,000 people at the "book party"...in the middle of Vermont!!! Moooo. I thought it was a joke, but the manager assured me they were shoulder to shoulder, having a blast. Someone, please tell me: what is going on? What am I missing? Am I just Scrooge at the age of 20!? I hope not, but really, fill me in (comment on this post) with either what the excitement is about or why you stayed up all night reading that book!?
