Surviving Political Divorce

It's difficult to watch a political marriage such as that between the UK and the EU fall apart. It's difficult to watch a political marriage such as that between the UK and the EU fall apart. After all, it's been 43 years since it was consummated: entire lives have come and gone since that time and many know no other way of life. However, when the unhappiness tops the happiness and talking, arguing, fighting, and counseling haven't worked, it's time to examine all of the options including unravelling the ties that bind.

It isn't a pleasant experience and some feelings on all sides will be hurt in the process, but the important thing is to focus on what's to come and building lives that are stronger and better apart than together. That isn't to say that the situation must degenerate into war, bickering, or the silent treatment; certainly not! Following a breakup, it's entirely possible to continue working together in a civilized and congenial way for the greatest good of all those involved.

Navigating the turbulence to come requires a cool, level head and great focus, cooperation, and maturity, but it can -- and must -- be done. The wedding ring is off now, and put away in the dresser drawer. It's time to stand strong, remain firm in resolve, and move forward. If there is one truth to hold self-evident in all of this, it is that regardless of the challenges thrown at her throughout all of history, England prevails.
