Sometimes models say the wrong thing. Ok, models mostly say the wrong thing, but Gisele Bundchen said something so wrong, it turned every single woman in the world against her.

Well, at least the women who read about it.

Modern Lady Erin Gibson takes on Gisele and talking heads like Whoopi Goldberg, Megyn Kelly,
Kimberly Guilfoyle, Deborah Norville, and Laura Ingraham who took the supermodel too seriously.

That goes to show that not all of us Brazilians are "noble savages" like Pelé, who never dared to have a strong opinion on his whole life.

Gisele reached the top of the world - as much as I don't care about this fashion world - and stayed there. She's got more money than she'll ever need, she's married to a successful dude that seems to be nice and likes her, she decided to become a mother and she's having fun at it. What she said - and more importantly, the way she did it - is pretty much what any successful young Brazilian mother would say.

So what hundreds of female pundits told her to shut up on TV? She wanted to send her message across and she, again, succeeded.

I've read many comments of mothers that had trouble breastfeeding who said Gisele was insensitive on her remarks.

But that was not why she said it, to make unlactating mothers feel bad. Let's not be blind here. How many mothers are just too lazy or too vain to breastfeed their babies or to bear without a C-section?

Different conditions change the rules. If you can't have a natural labour, or breastfeed, of course you won't have to.

Right on, Gisele. As much as I despise nationalism, you've just made me proud of your big Brazilian balls.

support to breast feed and give birth naturally is important and often sadly lacking. having laws like that smacks of totalitarianism.
anyway. people[ corporations and the medical establishment] won't stand for it. there is to much money in formula and cecarians.

Since she's not a lawmaker, I'm not too worried about her suggestion. I'm glad that she is able to breastfeed and enjoys doing so. I breastfed my children and did not receive support from anyone in my family or my husband's family. They just thought it was gross and icky, especially the women. And they were angry they couldn't feed the babies. My kids were rarely ill, they had fewer colds and other illnesses. Bottlefed babies often have a sour smell that emanates from their pores. Their spit-up and poop smell a lot worse, too. Breastfed babies always smell sweet and clean. Good on Gisele for making a great commitment to the health of her baby. It is a huge commitment, you have to be careful of your diet and of course there's the pumping and breast-leaking, etc. It's not all fun and not everyone can do it. Oh, BTW nursing doesn't stop every woman from ovulating. Some of us can still conceive while nursing full-time.

She didn't say something that was wrong. She just said something that wasn't PC and we all know how quickly anyone can make a liberal cry.

Storm in a teacup. People say daft things all the time, and nobody - absolutely nobody - is going to change their mind about something important because a supermodel says they should. I'd feel sorry for the fact that this is casting Gisele in a bad light, except that I know it's not going to do one iota of damage to her reputation for being astoundingly hot. So basically this whole story is of no consequence whatsoever. And not particularly funny, either, btw.

There are SO many reasons why that might be a problem; and anyone making such a sweeping, judgmental statement only proves her own ignorance. Most mothers who are unable to breast-feed feel bad enough already; they don't need some wealthy, pampered woman on a social crusade to make them feel threatened as well.

My son had a spastic jaw due to undiagnosed cerebral palsy. If I had decided to stand up while feeding him, he would have dangled from my chest until he fell asleep - unless he "mastectomized" (or "masticated"?) me first. I can laugh now, but I heartily sympathize with those who have problems with breast-feeding. Gisele should shut up and read before her next proclamation.

I am so sorry, Ms. Gibson, but I find "humor" based on deriding others to be akin to schoolyard bullying, particularly since you didn't include exactly what Ms. Bundchen actually said and in what context her comments were made. Why HP would post this under comedy is also beyond understanding. What is it about bullying, in any way is funny?

Gisele is of German descent, thus it's an even-money bet her name is properly pronounced

GEE-sell-ah, not jih-SELL, which would be correct if she were French.

Her point was apparently that babies do better on breasts than bottles, and she may also be aware that nursing is a natural contraceptive. She was obviously a bit clumsy in her advocacy, probably trying to be emphatic. Our on-air heads would do well to keep in mind English is probably not her first language, more likely her third after German and Portuguese.

Gisele (pronounced Jee-zel'-ee in Brazilian Portuguese (yes, "ee" is the ending)) is of German descent from a part of Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) with a long legacy of German immigration. She is sixth generation Brazilian and, no, does not speak German (though she did have to take German lessons in elementary school -- as all children in Horozontina did) of which she has apparently no recollection. She does speak English, Spanish and Portuguese fluently. And, IMHO, she is super smart as well as lovely.

AND this video with its attendant civics lesson was right on. Beautifully done.

Don't these news commentators have anything else upon which to focus?

I think the comment was simply meant to convey that people whose first language is not English use the language differently than native speakers. And the answer is no, they do not have anything else upon which to focus because if they did, we might know what's actually going on in this country and stop paying attention to the inconsequential fluff that is their bread and butter. Sigh.

Haha!! I have only been a mother about 6 times longer than Gisele so I'm not an expert like she is, but in that time I have learned one important lesson--never listen to unsolicited advice about parenting because opinions are like egos, everyone's got one.

Then how abotu a doctor's opinion? they would almost ALL suggest you do breast feed as it helps primarily with immunities. It may be her opinion but it is also right

Bundchen is actually right about breast feeding. It's immensely beneficial to both mother and child.

Side note, Erin Gibson is hilarious ...
