To the One Who Became My Sister

While I would not trade my brother for the world, I was incredibly envious of those with a sister to lean on, laugh with and learn from. I had come to terms to living without until the day I met you. It was then I learned sisters aren't made by blood; they are made from love.

Growing up without a sister felt like a mean trick my parents knowingly played on me because I believed having one was the key to getting through life without major emotional injury. While I would not trade my brother for the world, I was incredibly envious of those with a sister to lean on, laugh with and learn from. I had come to terms to living without until the day I met you. It was then I learned sisters aren't made by blood; they are made from love.

Lean On

You became my sister the day you proved that my problems were no longer just my own. I watched as you'd fight to collect all the broken pieces of my day and assemble them back together so that I would be whole again. I gained a quiet comfort knowing that when all else fails, I'll always have you in my corner.

You became my sister the day I, too, realized that your problems are mine. When you're in struggle, my heart hurts. All my responsibilities go by the wayside, and my concern is making sure you're okay or, at the very least, that you know I'll sit with you in your pain because that's what sisters do. We're there to lean on when life feels out of control, and we're there to lean on when life is so wonderful that we feel we might just float away. Good or bad, we're there.

Laugh With

You became my sister when my tears fell because of us laughing rather than my heart hurting. It's the type of laughter that can only come from being with those loved most. It's the look we give each other when something is said, and we know that only we will understand it. It's the moments when one of us made a complete fool of ourselves, but we're not afraid to laugh because there is no judgment felt. It's the moments that we reminisce over memories time and time again because living it once is just not enough.

You became my sister when the smile you put on my face was so big that it reached my heart.

Learn From

You became my sister the day our friendship became one that molded me into a better person. We've spent so much time together that I've learned countless lessons about how and who I want to be. I've watched you maneuver through the toughest of situations with such poise and strength that I was left inspired beyond words. I've watched you lead with a determination that empowers others to work as hard as you do.

You became my sister the day I realized you taught me more than I could ever hope to teach you.

Growing up without a sister has made me see how lucky I am now to have one. Even more, we weren't just told we were sisters; we picked each other. Knowing the rest of my life I'll always have someone to lean on, laugh with and learn from has me excited for all the days to come.
