Once the home to struggling artists, and now one of the most chic neighborhoods in town, Soho is New York's Paris in a nutshell -- or a few square blocks. Not surprisingly, as housing prices have skyrocketed and the area is home to the well-known and well-to-do, designer shops have followed. In fact, the rush is so great for space here that many are taking space on what I call the "side streets" between West Broadway and Broadway. Look to a few for your latest luxe acquisition!
Onassis -- 71 Greene Street
One of the newest entrants to the area, Onassis' menswear and accessories are utterly practical, completely fashionable and beautifully made.
Moods of Norway -- 75 Greene Street -- (website under construction)
Just a few weeks old, this second U.S. shop (the other is in Los Angeles) for this casual brand for men and women sells apparel, accessories, and even some Scandinavian food!
Stella McCartney -- 112 Greene Street
McCartney relocated from Meatpacking to this bright and airy shop, with her full apparel and accessories assortment. And I love the patterned floor!
Tiffany -- 97 Greene Street
What a way to celebrate your 175th birthday -- with this just-opened jewel of a store that (figuratively, alas) lights up the block with diamonds.
Versace -- 160 Mercer Street
Literally opened just days ago, the shop boasts a clean look and movable gold displays, and of course Donatella's great designs. Right now, it also is the exclusive location for Christopher Kane's gift items, including velour sweatsuits.
Michael Kors -- 101 Prince Street
Are you a jet-setter? Or just want to look like one? Kors is your source for apparel, accessories (even tech cases for all those gadgets) that will give you both function and glamour!
Marc Jacobs Collection -- 163 Mercer Street
In addition to conquering Bleecker Street in the Village, Jacobs has long had this outpost for his designer collection, ready-to-wear, accessories and shoes, all in his exceptional style.
Jitrois -- 98 Greene Street
Find every example of Jean-Claude Jitrois' genius at draping leather here -- from leggings to pants to jackets to dresses, to accessories.
Helianthus -- 196 Spring Street
This is the headquarters for the latest up-and-coming women's apparel and accessories designers (including Rebecca Minkoff, who'll have her own boutique in the area next year) to make sure you maintain (or create) an image of sophisticated, trendy chic.
Balenciaga -- 148 Mercer Street
When this boutique opens, expect great bags, and a full line from this classic design house.
Whether your goal is to purchase or merely to windowshop and admire some of the world's most beautiful merchandise, spend a day exploring Soho's side streets. And look for more side streets in upcoming blogs!
