Setaro Pasta
1 of 12
What: Setaro Pasta

Recommended by: Chefs Gabe Thompson of dell'anima, L'Artusi & Anfora and Jason Hall of Gotham Bar & Grill in New York.

Why: Made by a 4th generation company in Naples, Italy. The pasta is bronze die-cut so its surface is rougher and sauces stick easier than shiny, smooth pastas.

Buy: Buon Italia

Reading through the pages, I see no one has mentioned sun-dried tomatoes. Maybe they're no longer in, but I love them, especially the ones in oil. I don't throw out the oil either--delicious on pasta or in salad dressings. I have a winter tabbouli recipe made with sun-dried tomatoes.

This might sound boring to some, but Old Bay Seasoning should be in every pantry. :-)

Pantry staples should also include red wine, white wine or sake, vodka and sherry. Chili powder, thyme tarragon, garlic oil, dehydrated vegetables (in case you run out of fresh) lemon juice, a good quality virgin olive oil, olives, miso, vege or chicken broth, canned beans (garbanzo for hummus), tahini and cocoa powder.

Lots of different kinds of bitters to use in soups, stews, salad dressings, mix with stevia and sparkling mineral water as a fabulous alternative to sodas, and, of course, mixing adult beverages.

Gaaa! I thought this article would list generic staples with maybe some examples of brands that fill the bill. All this is is a big advert for these products. I'll just keep buying the awesome stuff in the German grocery stores to make all my own food from scratch. It's great to live in Europe! :-)

I use a lot of salt-free garlic pepper and different types of curry, sea salt, Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning and other salt-free seasoning blends.

I also love having Sriracha in the house! Also agree with having various spice blends to play with. Penzey's has some great products, and have a location at Grand Central Market in NYC and other locations, along with their mail order (great catalog!).
