New Year's Detox

Posted: 01/03/2012 8:45 am

A new year: a fresh start. Gone are the roasts, the cookies, the cocktails, those glorious hallmarks of the holiday season; we're going healthy, and we're loving it. Here are 10 dishes we'll be making all year long -- dishes so good we'll be raising our glasses (of water) to give a hearty "cheers!"

This soup might seem plain, but trust us. Paul Bertolli, who was at the helm of Chez Panisse and Oliveto for over 20 years, knows exactly how to make a vegetable become the best it can be. This recipe comes from Cooking by Hand, Bertolli's IACP award-winning book of recipes and essays, and makes for a soup that's delicate, sweet and smooth as a flannel scarf. - Kristen

Instead of sour cream, you can add greek yogurt to the borscht, certainly not the Ukrainian way but I think my Mom would forgive me.

How about following the countless articles based on actual nutritional science which all say that detox doesn't work; it can actually be damaging, and that improving your diet for the year as a whole is hugely preferable?

Jeez - so many people are gullible and fad obsessed...

Wow you read my mind. Our bodies are built to "Detox" themselves. There is no such thing as a detox.

Chill Out!
I thought most of the recipes looked very health and would certainly improve many life styles.

There is no such thing as a "detox". The notion that the body has accumulated toxins that can be removed by various food incantations makes about as much sense as the Hippocratic Humors. This is just outdated quackery repackaged as new age medicine. At least this placebo effect comes with a tasty meal.

I believe the point is "eat healthy now after holiday splurging and feel better."

No need to be so literal; the recipes look amazing and good for you.

The easiest way to detox is to avoid ingesting all the unhealthy crap in the first place. Revolutionary concept, i know.

WARNING! If your body cannot naturally detoxify itself, you are about to die, so go to the ER right away. No amount of fermented bean paste is going to help.
