Another Step Towards Global Peace

Posted: 09/24/2012 11:32 am

Imagine you're a 14 year old boy who has grown up in an area torn apart by conflict. You've lost family, friends and neighbors. You've fought alongside your older brother, and against your best friend. You haven't been to class, read a book, or played outside for as long as you can remember. You're a child soldier, caught in the middle of a conflict you never asked for. One that's difficult to escape.

Across the world our youth are engaged in war, civil unrest and deadly conflict. From Uganda to South Central Los Angeles, conflicts continue to take the lives of our youth. Today, 1.5 billion people live in countries affected by violent conflict. Globally, more than 8 million children have been killed or disabled as a result of conflict, and in these countries, over 60 percent of the population is under the age of 25.

These are heartbreaking statistics. These are our youth -- the leaders, innovators and peacemakers of our future. I've spent a lot of time with child soldiers, gang members, and refugee children in my role as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation. What I've come to understand is that youth across the globe share the same story, and have the same hopes - a life filled with joy and harmony where they can thrive on endless opportunities.

Youth have the power to create change. And for real progress to be made, they need to be a part of the solution. I know firsthand what it's like to see a loved one struggle with the traumas of war. For years, I watched my cousin; a young, brave and loving hero who tried to integrate in a society he believed had given up on him. He had nowhere to go. He was taught to be a soldier, that's all he knew. He turned to alcohol and a life of day-to-day living to drown out the guilt he carried for his deeds on the frontlines. He was never able to reconcile with himself, his home or his society.

This is why I'm proud to announce the launch of the PeaceEarth Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping youth, men, and women overcome these battles and share their individual stories with the world. It's a movement dedicated to benefitting everyone, regardless of age, gender, nationality or faith, and our mission is simple: empower individuals by creating a space for them to be heard, and inspire youth, women and men to promote peace everywhere.

To kick-off the launch of PeaceEarth, and in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the United Nations' International Day of Peace, I invite you to visit www.PeaceEarth.org. It's a dynamic digital platform that gives people the power to learn, engage and act. It's a global social movement that connects and fosters dialogue among communities, practitioners and scholars; giving people key information about conflict zones, best practices in peace-building and solutions. We live in a time when knowledge can be shared across borders in an instant. Knowledge we can use to help us grow as a global community.

We all face conflicts of different kinds throughout our lives, and by doing our part individually, we can collectively advance our world towards peace; one community, one person, and one day at a time.

We all need global peace now. Global peace can be attained through only mutual love, understanding, inter religious harmony and spirit of co-existence. We all further must have to be united against those elements who are indulged in spreading the politics of hate. We all have to fight against all types of hate, discrimination and injustice in each part of the world in order to make our globe a beautiful place to live. Please come forward to fight for peace and human rights for all.

Whats up with today's American college students. No civil disobedience, no protests. no demonstrations. No complaints. Guess there are no more military and civil rights issues. What about student loans and no jobs. What about the war on drugs? So is it contentment, apathy or inner peace?

We need ideas and actions such as these. Even though in the face of world conflict, it seems almost pointless, we need to show that ideas such as world peace are still goals people strive for everyday. It is almost like we need to keep thinking about, talking about, and working toward goals like this to give those in more hopeless situations "permission" to consider them as well, where it seems impossible.

People who pray for world peace yet "support the troops" confound me....

And as such the United States is much like a person with lung cancer who keeps smoking.

And frankly War is like smoking.... it's dirty, expensive, deadly, and addictive.

NOT having war is much easier than having one... and yet we go from war to war to war.

Our "troops" didn't ask to get sent to war. They made a commitment to protect us. I don't think we are supporting war by supporting our people involved in it. Emotional "support" is the biggest support we can give them. I strongly detest war myself. I wouldn't turn my back on our "troops" though. They are the ones that deserve the most credit. I Thank God for them protecting us!

I agree that our youngsters are great and deserve vastly more support than we're giving them. But what exactly are they "protecting" us FROM???

The Drug War is to blame for everything.
12:55 AM on 09/25/2012
There is only one solution that will build peace.
End the drug war!
As long as hundreds of billions of dollars pour out of the legitimate economy into the criminal economy, then we are only ever going to know poverty, corruption, violence, political instability, terrorism, suspicion, fear and ignorance from Uganda to South Central Los Angeles, it's all the drug war.
If you really want to do something for world peace then get behind initiates to legalize marijuana in Colorado, Oregon and Washington. Medical marijuana in Arkansas, Massachusetts. Support reform friendly politicians.
Anything else is a failure to address the underlying cause of our worlds modern problems and is no more than a band aid on a cancer tumour.
If any one state should legalize, federal and international law will be rendered null and void and other countries will follow suit and legalize and prohibition will fall like a Berlin Wall.
If you want to see a cessation of hostilities right around the world, then support drug law reform.
Gary Johnson for President.
War is Over!

Peace on earth will never happen until Jesus Christ returns someday, I know not when. The Devil is much to active in our world, and an inadequate number of people pay little attention to the source of peace.
That does not mean we should stop trying to acquire peace. It is a worthy goal, and should be pursued. It will require all of us working to make some progress.

If they are old enough to fight & die, youth should have a voice at the UN.

If we really want whirled peas, we can do things like, not give guns to kids, sit with them, and explain about various forms of influences, both positive and negative, and teach that critical thinking just as early on as possible, teach kids how to ask questions, teach them how to hold a conversation, how to control anger, all that good stuff. Or, the television and their peers and the video game industry and their favorite record album or whatever could turn them into raging angry unreasoning animals. Which is better?

realitytrumpsbull: It sounds like you are promoting home schooling where many of those ideas can be promoted and flourish. Public schools are failing our children. Television and video games are contributing, too, but most of the problem must fall on poor parenting skills from the adults.

As long as someone wants to take what someone else has, there will always be conflicts, including war. Human nature at its basic level.

I hope the concept of talking at conference tables rather than knee-jerk going to war will gain ground. When our President tries to talk like this, he gets criticized for being "weak" and caving to the enemy but those critics should just shut up and get up to speed. In the 21st century, humanity can't afford war any more, can we ? We the People know this but do the leaders of nations ? When they have to send THEIR kids to die in wars, maybe that will change things....
09:22 PM on 09/24/2012
Never going to happen.  War will always be the ultimate conflict resolution.  The bigger the prize, the more violent the conflict.  The leaders of nations don't really care about the children and warriors dieing as long as they can retain control of the keys to the treasury.
