10 Over The Top Airport Lounges (PHOTOS)

Posted: 12/05/11 07:50 AM ET

The gulf between first class and coach may be bigger than ever, but it never hurts to peek behind the curtain and see what the one percent is up to before they board their flights.

Besides, whether you're spending hard-earned dollars or miles, there's a wide range of difference between a standard airport lounge and the best in the world. Here are the top 10 airline lounge amenities that our Fortnighter team indulges in when traveling the globe researching our trips.

Refreshed by Marc Newsom in 2010, the Qantas business class lounge in Sydney has three, count 'em, three different types of lounge chairs specifically tailored for the space, along with Alessi silverware, a Payot Paris Day Spa and an entryway made of Italian marble. (Think of that the next time you walk on some old lounge carpeting). Despite the big names, it's hardly sterile thanks to the vertical garden with 8,400 plants and a soaring, arched design in the main seating area.

Pundit in my own mind

I was part of the 1% one-time, when I was a guest at the American/British Airlines lounge. It was so nice not to be in the packed boarding area or other general public lounges but I was quickly brought down to reality when it was time for me to board the plane and climb into my non-first class, coach seat. http://newsy1blog.com

I have been in a lot of overseas airport lounges and the Virgin Atlantic lounge in London Heathrow is amazing.
A chef stands ready to carve you a slice of rare prime rib, a full cold seafood bar, sandwiches, hot dishes, children's play area and the martinis flow like water!
Lovely.

I think I would rather have the massage or the free German beer as opposed to the touch screen PC's. American Airports have no amenities compared to our European and Far East Airports!

Interesting...the article reports on Lufthansa's Boston Logan "lounge,' and yet forgoes Lufthansa's incredible First Class (not even open to Business Class travelers!) TERMINAL at Frankfurt...the one that ferries 1st Class passengers from said dedicated terminal to their plane by chaffeured Porsche Cayenne SUV, among other "niceties."
