Democrats Accused of "Empty Words" on Immigration

What's Your Reaction:

There’s a very strong editorial today in La Opinion on the issue of immigration reform. Translated, the title reads, "No More Empty Words." It lays responsibility for any inaction on immigration this Congress squarely at the feet of Democrats.  It notes that in the past Democrats were able to blame Republicans for blocking comprehensive immigration reform, but not now, not with control of the White House and solid majorities in both chambers.

Now, most politicos won’t read this editorial because it’s in Spanish. So allow me to translate.

La Opinion is the country's leading Spanish-language newspaper, and a large swath of Spanish-speaking voters across the country will read it.  But it doesn’t stand alone.  The editorial reflects a growing sentiment among Spanish-speaking Latino voters, who turned out in record numbers in 2008 to vote Democrats into office (marking a major swing from 2004, when large numbers of Spanish-speaking voters turned out for Bush). The piece reads:

In an interview with La Opinion, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said she has hopes that reform would happen this year, without offering anymore details. This statement is as disappointing as were the words of President Obama in his State of the Union message to Congress. The time for empty words is over.

For many years, Republican intransigence was responsible for blocking comprehensive and fair immigration reform. Now the White House and Congress are in the hands of Democrats and the stalemate continues. House and Senate leadership are responsible for failing to place immigration reform on the agenda, and for failing to influence their ranks so that legislation is brought forward for consideration.

The editorial closes with a paragraph that should make all Democrats shudder:

Promises made during elections win votes and create hope.  The commitment to immigration reform attracted many votes and fed the hopes of millions of working people. Now Congress must keep its promise.

A Miami Herald piece this weekend strikes a similar chord:

As one of the first Latinos in the nation to endorse Barack Obama, Democratic state Sen. Gilbert Cedillo of Los Angeles campaigned hard for the president, but he's disappointed now.
The reason: Obama has yet to do anything on a comprehensive overhaul of immigration laws, as he promised to do when he ran for president.

"I think he's in danger of breaking the spirit of solidarity and hope," Cedillo said. "More than a broken promise, it's the danger of breaking people's sense of hope in the Latino community."

Yes, promises were made. And if this week's (Spanish) headlines and recent Latino polling are any indication, failure to keep promises will likely have consequences with Latino voters. Even in the mid-terms.

Last week my organization released a new report entitled, "The Power of the Latino Vote in America: They Tipped Elections in 2008; Where Will they be in 2010?"  It's a thorough analysis that spotlights Latino voting trends, expains why the issue of immigration reform will affect turnout, and identifies key races in 11 states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia) where Latino voters have an impact.

To put it bluntly, if Latinos don’t have a reason to vote in the mid-terms some 40 close races – including 8 Senate seats – could end up red and not blue.

But don’t Latinos prioritize the economy over immigration?  Yes, just like all Americans.  But what every political operative needs to understand is that while immigration might not be the top issue for most Latino voters, it is a defining one.  Their closeness to the immigrant experience and the fact that many live in “mixed status” families – made up of citizens, permanent residents, and undocumented immigrants – makes immigration reform a threshold issue for a majority of Latino voters.  That threshold wasn’t met under a Republican-controlled Congress and Presidency and Latinos turned on them with a vengeance. To date, it’s not been met under Democratic control.

In the wake of the election of Scott Brown, Democrats on Capitol Hill appear to be cowering instead of leading. Yesterday’s announcement from Evan Bayh will probably make this disturbing trend even worse. It shouldn’t. According to Sam Stein of the Huffington Post, Democratic strategists from across the spectrum are urging Democrats to buckle down and deliver:

Markos Moulitsas, the founder of the blog Daily Kos, said that the best way for Democrats to salvage the fate of the party before the 2010 elections is clear: "Deliver on their campaign promises."

"No one is asking them to go out on a limb and do something they didn't first run by the American people," Moulitsas said, in an email to the Huffington Post. "The Dems are where they are because they got elected promising to be a party able to govern, and then spent the last year proving themselves wrong."

On the opposite end of the Democratic Party spectrum, Lanny Davis, a longtime Clinton confidant and purveyor of the politics of compromise, offered a similar diagnosis.

There’s a simple, strong message for Washington Democrats coming in both Spanish and English: deliver on campaign promises.  Immigration reform, which both mobilizes a large group of new voters and promises some degree of bipartisanship, is a prime candidate for doing just that.

Promises made? What about the promises made to AMERICAN CITIZENS? Why should we pay BILLIONS to ILLEGAL ALIENS who don't belong here? We need that money for our own CITIZENS and LEGAL immigrants.
Those who hire ILLEGALS should be HEAVILY fined and the jobs for ILLEGALS would dry up and they would self-deport.
No matter where ILLEGAL ALIENS come from, what language they speak, or who they are related to they need to go back to their own countries and fight for their rights over there. Are you helping them with that?

I believe that this demonstrates how promises made on political camp gains truly cannot be trusted because much of what is said is merely to gain political support. With the issue of immigration, I think it is just going to remain untouched because it is hard to come to a consensus on the issue, and with health care reform being the subject of discussion, that will remain the focus. Also with waning political support, Obama no doubt will want to try to regain public support so dealing with a controversial topic like immigration will not improve his image, so he will most likely fail to address it with great concern throughout the rest of his term.

What gives these illegal aliens, these activists groups and the Catholic Church the right to demand amnesty for these illegal aliens. They have entered this Country ILLEGALLY and are doing nothing but destroying this Country.

Illegal aliens have made America the dumping ground for all their illegal alien children, then we have to school them and give them free medical care.

I for one, am sick and tired of these illegal aliens snubbing their nose at our immigration laws and the many other laws of this Country. If our Federal Government can not ENFORCE our immigration laws, and get these illegal aliens out of this Country, then let the States do it! One way or another, an end has to come to this illegal immigration, and not with AMNESTY! Amnesty will only encourage more illegal aliens to invade our Country and reward those who broke our laws and raped the American taxpayer in many ways...depressing our wages, taking our jobs, overwhelming our schools with their illegal alien children, driving without a license or car insurance, all the crime from stolen identities to rape, drugs and everything else.

It's time for ZERO TOLERENCE with these illegal aliens. It's time for them get out of this Country and back in their own Country where they belong.

ENFORCE THE LAW! NO AMNESTY!

This progressive has shot his bolt and is now a defunct relic. The Democrats know that these Latino advocates for illegal immigration have no place to go. Their only remaining venue for expressing their dissatisfaction in November is to vote Republican or stay home. These bellowing malcontents are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

IF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC supported mass legalization of illegal aliens, we would have had an amnesty already. After all, Frank Sharry's friends in Big Business have been pouring MILLIONS into pro-cheap labor/amnesty campaigns for the past decade. All of the elites have been pushing for amnesty: the media, the religious groups, professors, Ted Kennedy, George Bush, etc.

There's only one reason it's not going anywhere: Americans overwhelmingly OPPOSE legalizing illegal immigrants. They overwhelmingly want to see less immigration, both legal and illegal.

Sharry used to be able to blame the evil GOP, and now he has to blame the boogeyman. When will he acknowledge reality, namely that no one outside academia and the business community supports his mass-population growth, mass cheap labor agenda?

How about "our" government do its job (enforce existing immigration laws) instead of catering to special interests . I'm sick of tired of "latinos" demanding this and that. How about what is good for America for a change. To me groups like La Raza who push a hispanic agenda are detrimental to the unity of this country.

Frank, as pointed out by Matt Yglesias elsewhere, the majority of Dems in Congress support CIR as well as the following:

— A $1.2 trillion stimulus.
— The forcible breakup of large banks.
— Universal health care with a public option linked to Medicare rates.
— An economy-wide cap on carbon emissions, with the permits auctioned.
— Repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
— A path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
— An exit strategy from Afghanistan.
— An end to special exemption of military spending from fiscal discipline.
— An independent Consumer Financial Protection Agency.
— The Employee Free Choice Act.

None of these have happened. Instead, "centrists" who cower behind bipartisanship have obstructed and colluded with Republicans to block this agenda out of personal political interests. The White House needs to lead.

Fact is, Latinos were only 10 million out of the 131 voters in the last election. Even if ALL Latinos and ALL Blacks had voted for Obama, he still needed lots of White votes to win. A candidate can win on non Hispanic White votes alone. While Latinos are certainly an edge in a few areas where they're heavily concentrated, they're simply not that important overall in comparison with the non Hispanic vote. Of course, even Latinos aren't monolithic--roughly 30% of the Latino vote went to John McCain.
Obama's got a hard choice: supposedly cater to Latinos by offering amnesty, but risk losing the many voters of ALL races and ethnicities who oppose amnesty OR ignore the Latinos and reject amnesty. After all, who else are Latinos going to vote for? The Republicans?

As for "promises", well, Mr. Obama swore an oath of office to uphold the laws of this country. THAT and the interests of the AMERICAN people come before any promises to "Latinos", most especially to illegal aliens and their supporters.

Every action that Obama has taken since since the election has been to bite the hand of the Hispanic electorate that fed him. It is clear from Obama's enforcement-centric agenda that his desire is to deport more people than any President in the history of our country. Not Change I can believe in.

Deportation along with HEAVY fines for those who hire ILLEGALS is change I can believe in!
