Turn the Lights All the Way Up

Posted: 05/02/2012 8:59 am

Americans care about the food we eat and feed our families, now more than ever. In the span of just a few weeks, "pink slime" became a consumer phenomenon, leading to the unprecedented rapid-fire removal of the product from major stores and schools, the closure of production plants and USDA approval of voluntary labeling. Talk about legislation through retail.

It's not just ammonia in beef. Consumers are largely in the dark when it comes to how our food is produced -- whether it's artificial growth hormones in milk, antibiotics, Benadryl and other drugs in meat or genetically engineered ingredients hidden in processed foods.

Our food system has been adept at keeping the lights out or at least dimmed. But that is changing. The Internet has made information for many abundant and readily accessible at any time. Having the information we need to make an informed choice is no longer simply expected. It's required.

It's not just fringe activists and foodies who demand to know more about what we eat. We all want to know. Just look at the results of a recent Mellman Group poll completed for the Just Label It Campaign. The study showed that more than nine out of ten voters (91%) across all demographics -- including political parties, gender, age and socio economic status -- support labeling genetically engineered foods and the right to know.

Nearly all Democrats (93%), Independents (90%) and Republicans (89%) support labeling of genetically engineered foods. At a time when partisan rancor dominates the public conversation, there are few topics that can muster such overwhelming support. The right to know is a core American value, part of the building blocks of our democracy.

This value of the right to know is what drove more than 500 diverse organizations from across the nation to put aside their differences to work together for the labeling of genetically engineered foods (also called GMOs). The Just Label It Campaign generated a record-breaking 1.1 million comments on a petition to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) calling for GMO labeling. Never before in the history of the FDA have so many people unified in support of such a petition -- and they did it in just 180 days.

The trend is catching fire, as informed consumers are asking for the right to know about the foods they're purchasing and consuming. Today, the California Right to Know 2012 Ballot Initiative has officially become the first state to gather enough signatures (971,126) to put the labeling of genetically engineered foods on its statewide ballot this fall.

A study from the Center for Food Integrity, a coalition of agricultural business and industry associations including the American Farm Bureau, Tyson Foods and Monsanto, whose mission is "to build consumer trust and confidence in today's food system" concludes: "As consumer values change, the food system needs to evaluate and potentially modify current practices and fundamentally change the way it communicates in order to maintain consumer trust." Instead of fighting transparency, it's time to embrace it.

As the chairman of a $370 million national yogurt company, I've watched the consumer demand for more information about our food explode over the past decade. Whether it's the source of the ingredients, increases in agri-chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, plastics additives or potential allergens, the public is clearly far more engaged in making informed choices than ever before.

It is clear that the marketplace will shift long before government will and that smart companies are already responding to consumer desire for more transparency. But when will the government catch-up?

We all want peace of mind about our food. We want the information we need to make the best possible choices for our families. Our government can no longer ignore the voices of millions of Americans. Only by respecting that right, and the will of the people, will we be able to trust that our government agencies have the best interests of the American people as their top priority.

So let's turn the lights all the way up. The FDA should start by following the practices of more than 40 other nations and the wishes of nine out of ten Americans and label genetically engineered foods.

As a seafood safety, testing and certification company (Safe Harbor Certified Seafood), we feel consumers have the right to know what's in the food they're eating. Fish is the most traded food commodity in the world (UN FAO State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture, 2010) and the global supply chain is more complex than ever for all food categories. 86% of the seafood we eat domestically is now imported and offshore producers simply do not have the same oversight and regulation as domestic producers which leaves the door open for corner-cutting, the use of hazardous additives and chemicals and other abuses - we see it every day in every location we test. Unfortunately our government is under-manned and under-funded and simply can't be relied upon to be the protectors of public health we once thought. Many forward-thinking food manufactures (seafood and otherwise) feel that it is up to the industry (NOT the government) to increase the transparency of the supply chain and safeguard the very consumers eating their products; subsequently, as consumers become more educated (as can be seen domestically with the rapid rise of the organic and local food movements) and begin demanding labeling, transparency and increased food safeguards, advertising and strategically utilizing these "characteristics" of one's business will become major market "differentiators/disrupters" and will prove that these "trends" are actually good for business. As Mr. Hirshberg so deftly put it, "Instead of fighting transparency, it's time to embrace it." Amen.

Food, for processors, is all about addicting individuals in order to generate profit. One reasonable solution is to label what's actually in the food so the prospective consumer will know how to make the best choice. The FDA and USDA have been practically neutered in their ability to change anything by continually defunding thus making these agencies who oversee our food supply nothing more than an impediment to unrestricted pursuit of profit. How do we change this circumstance? By not voting for any representative that gets their pockets stuffed by out of control food processors supplied by industrial farms.

It's going to take a whole lot of new labels to get this right. As for all parties in agreement on the issue, that will change the second a bill is put before congress!

We have always assumed that our food and water supply was the best in the world. Now, third world countries have a safer food supply because it comes from local farms, and not agribusiness. Yes - the light should shine on our food supply - and add cosmetics and nutraceuticals, as well.

It's a vicious cycle. They are getting you sick with the foods you eat. Then taking your money by providing you with medicine that can "cure" your sickness. There is a smarter and better way. Get all the chemicals out of our food supply! Fresh, Local, Organic!!
12:02 PM on 05/03/2012
And let us not foget that the medicines that can cure that illness will also give us new illnesses so that we can keep going to the DR. It is going to be a huge mess.

The movie out right now called "Forks over Knives" is a must watch on this topic. The opening topic asserted that our children will be the first generation with a life expectancy shorter than their parents. It was enough that my sausage and bacon loving, high cholesterol husband has committed to moving aggressively toward a vegan diet and on the last trip to the grocery store brought home only organic vegies and fruits and whole foods - no meat. Many of today's health problems can be attributed directly to our food supply and the chemicals and genetically alterations associated with it. I have a right to know where my food came from and what is in it.

meat is not necessarily the problem. we eat locally sourced no antibiotic/growth hormone pasture raised beef and lamb and free range chicken and eggs...pasture fed milk, butter, cheese, yoghurt and ice cream.
tons of pesticides are dumped on veggies and many veggies are gmo. not to mention the millions of critters that are killed tilling the soil.

It's concerning to me that more people aren't interested in what goes on with our food supply. It alone has the ability to impact our nation's health more than anything else, for good or bad.

Monsanto will fight this tooth and nail, along with Cargill and all others like them. GMO is a nightmare and the genie is out of the bottle. I don't know that it can be put back in.

It cannot..... smile.....to OUR health the genie will remain out of the bottle!

Boycott! Change your family diet, then encourage friends and neighbors to change theirs. Talk about it in church, schools or where ever you have an audience.

The FDA, spit-swapping friend of Pharms and the American Medical Association, enemy to herbs, alternative health methods, and good health in general, is the most corrupt federal agency extant in our federal government.

They should not be called upon to "label" adulterated foods so that we may avoid them--that is like putting a warning label for oral consumption of gasoline.

Their job, should they obey their very reason for existence, should be to condemn and demand elimination of all engineered foods.

Should I be appointed to any position in the federal government by a sitting president, I would take the job as head of the FDA. My first move would be to recommend (loudly, daily) that corporations like Monsanto be thoroughly investigated, be subject to direct federal divestiture, and that every corporation dealing with food to be put on notice--draconian prosecution for engineering food product.

I would want this job because I would save more lives and spare more Americans less disease than our whole devolved medical establishment. Sound presumptious? Get serious.

Agrabiz with the support of an inactive congress has been pumping American bodies with poison, antibiotics and crap-o ingredients for decades. The food bounty of America has been corrupted. Farming by independent farmers is breathing its last breath.
03:20 PM on 05/02/2012
I agree with all of that save your last statement. At least where I live, there has been a real renaissance of small, local growers. True that it takes efforts to seek them out, but they are definitely around. I am choosing to hope this is the beginning of a long, sustainable trend.

So when will Stonyfield label its yogurt cups that it knows are made from genetically engineered corn? I think it is great that they are, however, to talk about the need for transparency on this issue, yet deny that transparency when it comes to your own products, is a big bad word that begins with an "H".

Right now it is illegal (thanks Monsanto) to label your food as non GMO.
So, if Stonyfield or anyone else should be required by law to list GE ingredients, I would expect them to conform with the law with proper labeling, as they do now, by not labeling.
What is the source of your information that they are selling organic yogurt using GE corn?
04:31 PM on 05/02/2012
It is NOT illegal to label your food as non-GMO. Check out the Non GMO Project as living proof of that. I also fully support truthful voluntary labeling that is not misleading, including that.
I should clarify my statement about the yogurt cups - I'm not talking about the yogurt in the cups but the cups themselves, which are made from corn. Stonyfield has admitted that this is made from commodity corn that is not segregated from genetically engineered corn. This means that on average, 85% of the material of the cups is made from genetically engineered corn. 'mothergrace' has already provided a link to the Stonyfield website where they admit this about their corn, but try to downplay its significance. It's a very funny and ironic situation, don't you think?

If they knock you down, bite 'em on the ankle.

Yes, exactly - they were forced to respond to questions from customers. However, still today there is no label on the package, which means that Stonyfield does not believe that their customers have a "right to know". If a statement on a website that will not be read by most customers satisfies the "right to know" demand, then that's all the other producers need to do. However, Hirshberg clearly believes that a "right to know" means there should be a label on the package, and his company has yet to deliver on that point.

I am much less concerned about GMO than about antibiotics and pesticides. I really don't like eating pesticides, and know that the widespread use of antibiotics enables crowding and the emergence of deadly antibiotic resistant organisms. I found it strange that GMO first upset people who had been eating pesticide-laden food for years, but am glad if this is the vehicle that awakened everyone to think about the origin of their food. SO, for food labeling, my highest priority would be a list of pesticides used and a reassurance that no preventive use of antibiotics was employed.
10:59 AM on 05/02/2012
GMO crops have more herbicide on them then non-GMO. The most common GMO is Round-Up Ready, meaning they can be sprayed at any time while growing and not die. Farmers used to have to just spray for weeds before or after the food crop. No matter what biotechnology fans say, Monsanto's Round Up use has more than doubled since GMO crops came into play.
As for pesticides, that GMO corn has the pesticide Bt mutated into every cell. yummmm-eee.

Over spraying of herbicide and pesticides are also killing wildlife and bees. People if we kill the bees there will be no cross pollination so it will kill crops that are not GMO. We must stop this or we will be signing up for our own deaths and our children's.

GMO IS pesticide-laden, because a) the corn used in the ingredients is programmed to produce toxins in every cell of the plant, and/or b) the crop had a gene inserted to resist the effects of being sprayed liberally with pesticides, leaving plenty of residues for you to eat.

We have a right to know what goes into our bodies. Many people out there (including myself) have allergies to hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, ect. I quit eating meat, most dairy, and buy all fresh or organic foods and grow my own when I can to supplement. Not much more expensive if you buy at the right places and right times. Thank you for writing about this very important subject. People wonder why they don't feel good or are sluggish. Watch what you eat, read all labels and get this passed that all food needs to be labeled for what is in it.

Support your local farmers. They work hard. And sign every petition you can to get better food labeling. Let's not let America become the dumping ground for pesticides and genetically modified foods that the rest of the world has outlawed.
