15 People Who Helped Me 'Build My Business'

Posted: 07/27/2012 10:28 am

Boy, did the president create a furor the other week in a Roanoke, Virginia speech where he said "if you have a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

"There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me because they want to give something back." He said. "They know they didn't -- if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own.You didn't get there on your own. I am always struck by people who think, 'It must be because I was just so smart.' There are a lot of smart people out there. 'It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.' Let me tell you something: There are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. If you are successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you did not build that-somebody else made that happen. The Internet did not get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off of the Internet. The point is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

As a small business owner, I ask... why the furor?

Yes, I get it. This kind of belief is populist. It downplays the risk takers. It's a knock on free enterprise. And even though I really do like the president, I don't support many of his economic policies. I don't share his beliefs in the role that the government should play in our lives. I still don't think his background is suitable for understanding a business person's issues. I'm not so sure re-electing him would be a very good thing for my business.

But can we all calm down about what the president said? Because he's right. Like all business owners, I didn't solely build my ten person company. At least not alone. I had a lot of help. In fact, here are just a few key people who helped me build my business, in no particular order.

1. My father. Even though he was, in my opinion, the world's worst business man, he did give me both a moral and financial start when we first went into business together back in the early 1990s. More importantly his overall advice to me about what courses to take in college and for understanding the world around me was invaluable to helping me think ahead.

2. My wife. No one can truly build a business and a family together without a very supportive and understanding spouse. My wife let me use our family savings initially and was patient with the hours I had to put in. And thank goodness for John, my next door neighbor, who kept her company through all those long hours alone. Hey, wait a second...

3. My landlord. For a few years, I was using a friend's rented apartment as my base of business operations. This was not a commercially zoned building so technically I was violating the rules. The landlord of the building knew but turned an eye. OK, OK... the guy was 87 years old and technically blind anyway. I'm not sure he even knew my name. But having a rent free office while starting up was critical to building my business.

4. Howard Stern. Whenever things got tough I could always say to myself: at least I have more business sense then Jackie The Jokeman. There is nothing like laughing hard to keep your mind off your startup problems.

5. My accountant. I always make fun of accountants, mostly because I'm a bad one and was always jealous of the guys who did it better. And besides, he was the one guy in the world that I could probably beat up in a fight, and that helped my self confidence. But in the early days my accountant gave me many free hours of his time in the form of advice and tax counseling that was incredibly valuable.

6. My early customers and vendors. These people knew I was still green and my company was very young. My customers were patient with my technical mistakes and my vendors let me slide a few days if cash flow was tight. People were willing to give me a shot. Then again, my customers were getting a rock bottom hourly rate so maybe they weren't as altruistic as I'm making them out to be!

7. Al Gore. For the Internet. Thank you sir.

8. "Seth Metzman." A client of mine (name withheld) who once sat me down for two hours and explained to me everything I was doing wrong in my business. This was from his cluttered, cigarette-smelling office above a strip mall pizza shop. I decided that doing the opposite of whatever this business genius recommended would be my best course forward. And it worked.

9. Robert C. He owned the summer camp where I worked from the age of 12 through the end of college. Initially he paid me (and a bunch of other naive teenagers like me) one dollar an hour to do maintenance jobs on Saturdays. It wasn't the money, it was the lessons on how to do a job the right way that stayed with me the longest. Having said that, and looking back on it, I have to admit the guy made a mint off of us!

10. Jack Daniels. The best partner any business owner could have. Especially after a long day of defeats.

11. Uncle Irving. My grandmother's brother, he worked most of his life for Meyer Lansky (another story for another day) and lived into his eighties. We were very close. But unfortunately, many of the details of his stories were lost on a fifteen-year-old at the time. One thing I took away: make the other guy profitable and you'll have long term success (not to mention life expectancy).

12. "Rich Anderson." One of my very first managers I worked for at KPMG. That was when I often forgot to wear a belt, put on different colored socks and didn't know how to tie a tie. He saw something in me then although God knows what it was. He mentored me, taught me how to properly dress and how to behave in a professional environment. Those silly lessons proved invaluable over my business career.

13. "Ed Baumdale." My all time worst client. He paid me a pittance, abused my work, abused me, showed no appreciation and was irrationally demanding. It's yet another story for another day. But looking back, Ed helped me crystallize which clients to avoid when building my business.

14 and 15. Mr. Brooks and Professor Sinclair. Yes, these are their real names. And they are the two best teachers I've ever had. Mr. Brooks didn't just teach me 11th grade chemistry at Central High School. He taught me how the fear of failure can bring out the best of me (and how to quickly dodge a piece of chalk thrown in my direction). And Professor Sinclair's Socratic method of teaching management accounting at Lehigh University forced me to think ahead and be prepared for every class. How can anyone build a business without these skills?

I could go on. There are others. But you get the point. I didn't build my business by myself. I had help. Without them I wouldn't have made it to where I am today. I believe that's what the president was trying to say. And if that's the case, then he was absolutely right.

So is the president saying because you didn't build that on your own now you should be forced to pay more in taxes? The amount of money you personally invested means nothing? Truly what is the president's point? If you are successful you owe it back to society?

All of these companies you mentioned make money from your business too, so do you think the president means because you were successful in your endeavor you are now responsible to give back to the country by paying higher taxes? Does he want you to pay more so the 49% who don't pay any taxes, yet many of them live very well, still don't have to kick in their "fair share". Why are you targeted to pay higher taxes? My husband owns a small construction company, before I can even do payroll I need to have business insurance 13k, health insurance 10k, and 8k for property taxes. So now I am out on the ledge, wondering will I be able to make the 31k to cover my essential expenses before I pay for anything else. On top of that now you want to raise my tax rate for what reason? So Obama can continue on his spending spree

Gene Marks forgot to mention how important a bank is to help start a business and to help that business to grow.

The author still misses the point of Obama's less than eloquent comments. Sir, your business has also benefitted from:
1. The local public schools that educate your employees.
2. The local roads and infrastructure and public services (fire, police) you rely on.
3. Possibly government contracts or work for contractors or sub contractors. Or just business from government employees.
4. Likely your own public school education and public resources that prepared you in the first place.

Your list was short buddy.

Everytime the President goes with his own words he hurts himself, "if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own." or " I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody." or maybe "more flexibility," referring to discussions of missile defense, after his election. Maybe when he put a Communist into his admin. (Van Jones). Think hard before you vote for Obama.

Obama is a European Socialist.

For all intents and purposes....that is a combination of Communism and Capitalism.

And yes....you're right....it's a baztard definition for a baztard thing.

The Chinese are currently the most successful Communist Capitalists.

They allow their citizens to have only one child.

There are no free elections.

Yes...they are quite advanced.

“Somebody invested in roads and bridges”

“Government research created the Internet”

Maybe not on this list but there nonetheless.

And please quit shouting.

I have my own business. I look at where I am this: there were all those who gave their lives to create and protect the freedom I have to be a businesswoman, from Lexington and Concord right on to present day; there were my own ancestors who survived incredible inhuman hardships to get to this country and continue to fight to survive so that some day I could survive; then there is my own relationship with God; and yes, there is even a poet who said quite turly that no man is an island. If all you do is look about yourself and can't see the rest of the world, there is something wrong. Like me, I bet you didn't have a magic wand to wave everything into existence. As for those who helped you along the way I sure hope you thanked them.

The author's defense of the Presidents remarks is amusing. I think most people who take the entrepreneurial journey would find the statement another example of this Administrations disconnection from reality. For example, that highway system the President alluded to came after the Model T. Mr. Ford introduced the automobile in 1908. Eight years later, the Federal Highway Act passed. The point being the Government has a history of reaction as opposed to being proactive. If Mr. Ford had waited to introduce the car until paved highways were constructed, we may still be on horses.

Actually eight years is a very good reaction time when you are talking about something as big as building a highway system. Why in the world would the U.S. Government have built a highway system before the Model T was in production?

The President should write his own speeches, I could have done better.' How did I get where I am today? Hard Work! Did I receive any help along the way? Yeah, Hard Work! How can someone follow in your footsteps? Hard Work!

And government would not have a dime if it were not for economic activity that business people conduct each day. The President does not get it. A business has to start with an idea, that comes from a person, NOT from Washington. I pay $40,000 in taxes to the goverment, if I decided not to have a business and sit on a park bench where would government get the revenue? Sitting on the park bench I would cost the government $35,000 per years ( government benifits paid to me) thus net cost to the government would be $80,000 per year! No business equals no jobs or taxes for the government. The freedoms of this America has made this country great.

So business helps government and government helps business, sounds like a partnership of sorts.

Isn't the extension of this thinking that no worker earned their job, some one else created it (the customers), that hard work wasn't why they kept it and got raises, other people were the reason.
And those people owe more taxes too

Marks is probably right. His business probably coud have formed itself. He left out his childhood pet, his neighbor two doors down, the mailman, Hormel chilie with beans and many more..... and we mustn't forget Al Gore's greatest invention.... the AlGorithm. Much here for a revival of Twilight Zone.

I might be one person who can't complain about what the President said, misinterpreted or not. I sell school and teacher supplies and without public schools, I would have very few customers. And my customers would have no money to make purchases. True, I pay taxes, but so does every other person in this country. And I am not the person who decided where the schools went, or budgeted money for schools and teachers, state government did that. The same is true with roads. In addition, banking regulations made it affordable for me to get a bank loan. Without it, I never could have afforded rent and merchandise for many years, after which I would have been forced to start a traditional job.

What is Gene Marks' business? He always talks about his business, but what is it? An ice-cream store? A jewelry store? An oil change place? A diner? A coffeeshop? A grocery store?
